Slow is smooth : It is often necessary to slow things down. The brain has much better opportunity to recognize, analyze and learn what is happening around you and to you.

This concept applies very well to movement and motor learning, especially when beginning to learn new movement or skill. Going to fast intially often creates chaos and poor learning conditions.

By going slow, we can begin to smooth a movement pattern out. This is often called as ' greasing the groove ' when applied to strength training.

Slow exposes faults and allows for course correction. Fast often hides faults and allows for compensations or poor learning conditions. For example , when learning to squat, a slow tempo squat with a pause at bottom allows you to find a nice smooth pattern over time. It demands control, which produces a smoother and more refined movement.

Smooth is Fast : Slow practice allows for a smooth, refined and ingrained pattern to emerge over time. The brain has gathered data through each repetition.

A smooth pattern can gradually speed up. The key is that control is maintained as the pattern speeds up.

The intial investment in going slow and maintianing control affords you to the opportunity to speed things up with grace and efficiency. Smooth ends up allowing for speed in the end.

Ofcourse, its not always about going fast. But starting slowly and building a smooth and refined pattern creates the foundation of true speed.

What do we treat first...?
Symptoms or cause...?
It all depends on patients history and how deep you look. Always look for what kind of injuries they had in past. It can be 20 years old car accident or surgery that is now causing so called new pain. But its not new pain, it's just been hiding through all this time. We all have compensations, some create pain some don't and when they do we should aim to find the root cause.
