Gurpurab stands for the Gur Parv, which is the celebration of the birth of the 1st Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Nanak Ji. This is the most significant festival in the Sikh calendar and it falls in the month of Kartik, which is the month of November. Gurpurab is on the 8th of November 2022 and it is the 553rd Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Ji. The Gur Parv is a time to reflect on the teachings of the Guru, and people from all over the world come to Punjab to celebrate this festival.

According to Hindu mythology, on this day, Yamraj, the God of Death, paid a visit to his adoring sister, Yami (Yamuna). His sister greeted him with aarti and a tilak ritual. She presented him with a garland and various delicacies, including sweets. He had given her sister a one-of-a-kind present as a token of his love and concern for her. Yamraj had declared that the brothers who would receive tilak and aarti from their sister would never be afraid. As a result, the same day is known as the Yama Dwitiya.

Another version goes that after destroying the demon king Narakasur, Hindu Lord Krishna came to his sister, Subhadra, and was greeted with tilak, aarti, sweets, and flowers.
