"Happy National Orthodontist Day!
Today, we recognize the dedicated professionals ‘Orthodontists’ -who craft beautiful, healthy smiles. October 5th serves as a reminder of the significance of addressing malocclusion, a condition affecting over 70% of the population.
Apart from bad looks, low self-esteem and confidence, malocclusion can have systemic implications.
Here are some relationships:
*Cardiovascular Health:*
1. Periodontal disease, often associated with malocclusion, increases the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke.
2. Bacterial endocarditis, linked to poor oral health, can damage heart valves.
*Respiratory Health:*
1. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is more common in individuals with malocclusion, particularly those with narrow upper airways.
2. Poor oral posture due to malocclusion can lead to mouth breathing, exacerbating asthma and other respiratory issues.
*Nutritional and Digestive Health:*
1. Malocclusion can lead to difficulty chewing, swallowing, and digesting food, potentially causing malnutrition.
2. Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorders, often related to malocclusion, can cause digestive issues like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
*Neurological and Psychological Health:*
1. Chronic pain from TMJ disorders or malocclusion can contribute to migraines, headaches, and depression.
2. Malocclusion has been linked to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and anxiety disorders.
*Systemic Inflammation:*
1. Periodontal disease associated with malocclusion can increase systemic inflammation, potentially exacerbating conditions like arthritis, diabetes, and Alzheimer's.
*Other Associations:*
1. Malocclusion has been linked to ear infections, sinusitis, and hearing problems.
2. Poor oral health due to malocclusion may increase the risk of preterm labor, low birth weight, and gestational diabetes.
Keep in mind that these relationships are not exhaustive and Orthodontists play a vital role in correcting malocclusion, enhancing oral health, and transforming lives.
Let's appreciate their expertise and commitment to creating radiant smiles!
