Raksha Bandhan: A Sacred Bond Beyond Time
✍️ Dr. Shivaji Kumar
The very mention of Raksha Bandhan brings to mind the affection of brothers and sisters, the colorful threads of rakhi, sweets, and gifts. But if we go deeper, this festival is not merely a family celebration — it is a symbol of the unbreakable, eternal, and divine bond between the soul and the Supreme Soul.
"Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah, Sarve Santu Niramayah,
Sarve Bhadrani Pashyantu, Ma Kashchid Dukh Bhagbhavet."
This festival reminds us that true protection is not external but internal — when we fill our minds with pure thoughts, truth, and spiritual strength.
History and Original Form
In ancient times, Raksha Bandhan was not confined only to brothers and sisters. Brahmins would visit homes to tie the raksha sutra, symbolizing the pledge to uphold dharma, truth, and righteous duties. This sacred thread was a vow to maintain morality and unity in society. Over time, the practice simplified into a celebration between siblings, but its spiritual meaning remains just as relevant.
"Dharmo Rakshati Raksh*tah" — One who protects dharma is, in turn, protected by dharma.
Divine Protection: The Strongest Bond
In today’s world, the internal enemies — lust, anger, greed, attachment, and ego — are far more dangerous than external challenges. At Samarpan Yoga, Naturopathy, Spiritual Healing, and Ayurveda Centres, Raksha Bandhan means taking a divine vow before the Supreme Soul to maintain purity in our thoughts, words, and actions.
This rakhi is tied not just on the wrist, but upon the soul — through remembrance and meditation. It is a pledge:
"I will not allow negativity, wastefulness, or weakness to come near me."

Here, the rakhi signifies a sacred covenant between the soul and the Supreme:
"I, the soul, will walk the path of purity, truth, and self-awareness, under the canopy of God’s grace."
Main features of the celebration include:
Tilak: Applied at the centre of the forehead, signifying the awareness of the soul.
Rakhi: Symbol of God’s love and protection.
Silent Meditation: Moments of deep spiritual connection with the Supreme Father.
Sweet Offering: Not only for taste but to inspire sweet thoughts and behaviour.
Blessing Card: A personal message from the Supreme to keep as inspiration throughout the year.
"Shubham Karoti Kalyanam Arogyam Dhana Sampadah,
Shatru Buddhi Vinashay, Deepa Jyotir Namo’stute."
Purity: The Armour of the Soul
Raksha Bandhan reminds us that true protection lies in purity. This is not limited to celibacy, but extends to purity of thoughts, emotions, and relationships. When the soul stays connected to the Supreme Soul, its inner world becomes bright and powerful.
True Sweetness and the Greatest Gift
True sweetness is in gentle speech, humble conduct, and benevolent feelings. And the greatest gift is the practice of silence — taking a few moments daily to connect with the Supreme, filling the mind with love, peace, and power. This is the living raksha sutra.
A Universal Message
Across many parts of the world, Samarpan Yoga, Naturopathy, Spiritual Healing, and Ayurveda Centres celebrate this festival beyond the boundaries of caste, creed, and gender. The message for every soul is:
I am a soul, peace and purity are my nature.
I belong to that Supreme Soul, who is always with me.
I will walk the path of love, compassion, and truth.
"Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" — The whole world is one family.
This Raksha Bandhan, let us move beyond external protection and take a vow to protect the soul — to tie that divine bond with the Supreme, which can never be broken.
