Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a common skin condition where dark spots or patches appear after skin inflammation or injury, such as acne, eczema, or even cuts and burns. This darkening occurs due to an overproduction and irregular dispersion of melanin, the skin’s natural pigment, in response to the healing process.
PIH can affect anyone, but it’s more prevalent and often more noticeable in individuals with darker skin tones because their melanocytes (melanin-producing cells) are more reactive.
Treatment options include topical creams, chemical peels & laser treatments by a board certified dermatologist.
