Pondicherry Pharmacy Council (PPC) is a statutory body constituted by the Government of Puducherry under the provisions of The Pharmacy Act of 1948. The council consists of six members elected by Registered Pharmacists amongst themselves, five members nominated by Government of Puducherry, one member elected by the State Medical Council and three Ex-Officio members. The main objective of the Pondicherry Pharmacy Council is to regulate the profession of pharmacy in the state of Puducherry. The prime function of the Pondicherry Pharmacy Council is to grant registration to the eligible pharmacists possessing requisite qualification as per the provisions of section 32 (2) of The Pharmacy Act and to enforce the necessary provisions of The Pharmacy Act, 1948. HISTORY
Under Section 30 (4) of The Pharmacy Act, 1948 (Central Act VIII of 1948) the Pharmacy Act was implemented in the Union Territory of Pondicherry. The Pondicherry Pharmacy Registration Tribunal for preparing the First Register of Pharmacists was constituted under Notification No. 21120/Dev/PH/63, dated 24.09.1965 of the Planning & Development Department, Pondicherry and published the First Register in the official Gazette (LA GAZETTE DE L'ETAT, Supplement (II), No. 52, dated 30th December 1969) vide Health and Family Planning Department, G.O. (The date of first admission to the Register was on 30th June 1968)

CONSTITUTION OF PONDICHERRY PHARMACY COUNCIL
The Pondicherry Pharmacy Council, Puducherry is a statutory body constituted under Section 19 of The Pharmacy Act, 1948 by the Government of Puducherry vide G.O. No. 16/75/Health, dated 25.02.1975. The Pondicherry Pharmacy Registration Tribunal was wounded up on 25.02.1975. Six members elected by the Registered Pharmacists amongst themselves under Section 19 (a) of The Pharmacy Act, 1948. Five members, of whom at least (three) shall be persons possessing a prescribed degree or diploma in Pharmacy or Pharmaceutical Chemistry or Registered Pharmacists, nominated by the Government of Puducherry under Section 19 (b) of The Pharmacy Act, 1948. One member elected by the State Medical Council under Section 19 (c) of The Pharmacy Act, 1948. The Director of Health and Family Welfare Services/The Chief Administrative Medical Officer - Ex-Officio member under Section 19 (d) of The Pharmacy Act, 1948. The Commissioner, Food and Drugs Administration/Officer-in-charge of the Drugs Control Organisation - Ex-Officio member under Section 19 (dd) of The Pharmacy Act, 1948. The Public Analyst, Public Health Laboratory, who is the Government Analyst under the Drugs and Cosmetic Act, 1940 - Ex-Officio member under Section 19 (e) of The Pharmacy Act, 1948.
