14th January is celebrated as Makar Sankranti, also day of Uttarayan Parv when Sun changes it's axis to Uttarayan(north) direction.

This day has great spiritual significance. That is why Bhishma Pitamah chose to leave for heavenly abode leaving his mortal body on this day.

Each one is strongly recommended to do following activities on this day to reap maximum spiritual and physical benefits:
1. Listen to Aditya Hridaya Stotra three times in the morning
2. Do Surya namaskar and Sun bath. Expose your navel and give exposure to body in the Sun.
3. Do Ubtan bath. You can know about how to prepare Ubtan from internet.
