Following our recent post on the stages of Sirsasana, this snippet from our asana class looks more closely at the role of the arms in supporting the pose.

The way the arms are placed and used often determines how steady and sustainable the headstand will feel. It is not simply about interlocking the fingers, but about how the forearms press down, how the elbows are positioned, and how the shoulders lift to create space for the neck.

When this action is understood and applied with care, the weight is more evenly distributed and the head is not burdened unnecessarily. The asana begins to feel lighter and easier to stay in.

This demonstration focuses on that foundation, offering a clearer sense of how to build support from the ground up before attempting to go up.

As part of our series ‘Taking Out a Minute’, Rajeshree shares a simple way to respond to fatigue when rest is not immediately available.

Rest remains the most effective way to recover. Yet in the middle of a working day, while travelling, or between responsibilities, it is not always possible to pause in the way the body may need. In such moments, small interventions can help shift how we feel.

In this video, Rajeshree demonstrates how gentle pressure on the ears can support this shift. The ears reflect the body in a subtle way, and working with these points can send signals through the nervous system that encourage a move towards a more settled, restorative state.

This is not a replacement for rest, but it can offer support when fatigue begins to build and there is little room to step away. Over time, such practices help develop a more responsive and aware relationship with the body’s signals.

There is a growing tendency today to move quickly towards Sirsasana early in one’s practice. But Sirsasana is not about reaching the final pose but it is about how you arrive there.

Each step has its own purpose. The placement of the hands, the positioning of the head, the gradual walk in, and the lift through the core are not just preparatory actions. They build clarity, strength, and direction in the body. When these are given time and attention, the pose begins to feel less like an effort and more like a state one can stay with.

With consistent practice, alignment brings a certain ease. At that point, the practitioner is no longer preoccupied with holding the asana together. There is space to observe, to refine, and to remain quietly attentive.

Over time, it becomes apparent that the person who comes down from Sirsasana is not quite the same as the one who went up. The change is subtle, but it is there in the steadiness of the breath and the quality of awareness. This is what allows those few minutes in the pose to have a deeper effect, beyond the physical form.

As the season changes, so must our practice.

With the onset of summer, the body and mind are exposed to extreme heat. While this fiery energy can encourage activity, overexertion through intense practices may lead to fatigue, irritability, and burnout.

The practice must shift towards cooling, grounding, and more supported movements. The use of the Iyengar yoga props becomes especially significant in this season to reduce unnecessary strain and prevent excess heat generation.

At Shriyog, this sensitivity to seasonal change has always guided our teaching. The sequencing of asanas is thoughtfully adapted, allowing the practice to remain sustainable and deeply restorative.

A few moments from our recent workshop “Understanding Anxiety Through Yoga.”

Through discussion and practice, students were introduced to asana sequencing, techniques of breathwork and the theory behind it, that can help during phases of anxiety and stress.

At Shriyog, our intention is to create spaces where yoga can be understood not only as a physical practice, but as a meaningful support for everyday life. It was heartening to see students engage so thoughtfully with the subject and share their own experiences.

Anxiety is not only experienced in the mind but it’s also felt in the breath, the body and the nervous system.

In yoga, we learn to observe these patterns and work with them through breath, movement and awareness. With the right practices, yoga can help bring steadiness and support balance during periods of anxiety.
