The koshas are key to enhancing awareness of one’s inner world and developing a connection between mind, body, and spirit. Attention to the koshas may awaken deeper states of awareness on one’s path to self-realisation.
The five koshas and what they signify :
1. Annamaya Kosha / The Physical Sheath:
This is the outermost layer, made up of the physical body, and is called the food sheath because it’s sustained by what we eat. It reflects your weight, size, physical health, and how your body responds to food and activity. Caring for this kosha means maintaining good nutrition, movement, and rest.
2. Pranamaya Kosha/ The Energy Sheath :
This layer is made of prana, the life force or breath that powers the body.It reflects your energy levels, vitality, and how freely energy flows within you.Awareness of this kosha helps you clear blockages and feel more alive and connected.
3. Manomaya Kosha/ The Mental Sheath:
This sheath represents your mind, emotions, and thoughts. It processes experiences from the outer world and shapes your inner world. Awareness of this kosha means observing your mental patterns, beliefs, and emotional responses.
4. Vijnanamaya Kosha/ The Wisdom Sheath :
This is the layer of intuition, insight, and inner knowing. It helps you see beyond thoughts and ego, offering clarity and self-awareness.By observing the mind without attachment, you develop discernment and presence.
5. Anandamaya Kosha – The Bliss Sheath :
This is the innermost layer, made of pure joy, peace, and spiritual bliss. It’s felt in deep stillness, beyond the mind and ego. Connecting with this kosha brings a sense of wholeness, love, and unity with all.
