Let’s understand the importance of why cats need a non-vegetarian diet.
1) Cats are obligate carnivores, which means, they depend only on meat for survival. Their bodies cannot digest plants properly, in addition to the fact that plants don’t provide enough nutrients for obligate carnivores.
2) Cats get certain key nutrients from meat including taurine, arachidonic acid, vitamin A and vitamin B12 - that once again can’t be sufficiently obtained from plant-based foods. Without a steady supply of these nutrients, cats can suffer from liver and heart problems, not to mention, skin irritation and hearing loss.
3) It’s important to remember that taurine in an important amino acid for cats. It is mainly found in protein-rich animal-based food, such as meat, fish, shellfish, poultry, eggs and dairy products.. A taurine deficit can have severe consequences such as blindness and heart failure.
So the next time you think of altering your cat’s diet, be sure to make an informed choice.
