Varicose veins are swollen, twisted, and enlarged veins that usually appear on the legs and feet due to weak or damaged valves in the veins, which cause blood to flow backward and pool instead of moving properly toward the heart. They may look blue or dark purple and can cause symptoms such as pain, heaviness, swelling, itching, and fatigue in the legs, especially after standing or sitting for long periods. Factors like aging, pregnancy, obesity, lack of physical activity, and long hours of standing can increase the risk of developing varicose veins. Yoga can be very helpful in managing varicose veins by improving blood circulation, strengthening leg muscles, and reducing pressure on the veins. Gentle yoga postures such as Legs Up the Wall (Viparita Karani), Shoulder Stand (Sarvangasana), Leg Raise, Tadasana, and simple stretching exercises help promote upward blood flow and relieve swelling. Regular practice of deep breathing (Pranayama) and relaxation techniques also reduces stress and improves overall circulation. Practicing yoga daily, along with maintaining a healthy lifestyle, can help control symptoms and prevent the condition from worsening.

Asanas are yogic postures that help strengthen, stretch, and relax the muscles of the body. For back pain, specific asanas work by improving posture, increasing flexibility, reducing muscle stiffness, and strengthening the spine and surrounding muscles.

These asanas help by:
β€’ Improving blood circulation to the back
β€’ Reducing tension and stiffness
β€’ Strengthening core and spinal muscles
β€’ Correcting posture
β€’ Promoting relaxation and stress relief

Regular practice of back-friendly asanas can help reduce pain, prevent future problems, and improve overall spinal health when done correctly and under proper guidance.

During the second and third trimester, Surya Namaskar can be practiced in a gentle and modified form to support a healthy pregnancy. When done safely, it helps improve blood circulation and oxygen supply to both mother and baby, strengthens the back, legs, and pelvic muscles needed for childbirth, and reduces common discomforts such as back pain, stiffness, and fatigue. Slow, mindful movements combined with deep breathing promote relaxation, reduce stress and anxiety, and improve sleep quality. Modified sun salutations also help maintain flexibility and support digestion, which can ease bloating and constipation. However, the traditional fast-paced sequence should be avoided, along with deep forward bends, strong abdominal pressure, and lying flat on the back. It is important to practice only under guidance, listen to the body, and consult a doctor or prenatal yoga expert before continuing, especially in high-risk pregnancies.

The 90–90 hip opening stretch is a powerful exercise to improve hip mobility and release tightness in both the internal and external hip rotator muscles. Sit on the floor with your front leg bent at 90 degrees in front of you and your back leg bent at 90 degrees to the side, keeping your chest upright. The front hip works on external rotation while the back hip focuses on internal rotation. As you gently lean forward over the front leg (without rounding the spine), the stretch deepens in the hips and glutes. Practiced regularly with slow breathing, the 90–90 stretch helps reduce hip stiffness, improves posture, supports lower-back health, and enhances overall movement quality.
