Presented talks on approach to bleeding disorders in children and an overview of management of ITP, hemophilia and thalassemia for Pediatricians at a CME organised by IAP Dharwad.
Many thanks to Dr. Ravi Joshi from Narayana for the opportunity and the wonderful organisers Dr Veeranna Mudhol and Dr Marthandappa.
The audience included senior Pediatricians and postgraduates with whom we had an interactive panel discussion on common hematological and oncological issues in children.
It was also a pleasure to interact with Dr Arun (HOD, Ped oncology Kidwai)and Dr Mohan Reddy (Lead, BMT program, Sankalp foundation).

Children can get cancer and it's curable! Most of the childhood cancers have excellent outcomes with multidisciplinary management based on chemotherapy with or without surgery and radiotherapy! Children tolerate chemo better than adults and can go on to live a normal life after completing successful treatment! Gene therapy a dream for many families with thalassemic patients and for the doctors treating them. A treatment that can avoid side effects like GVHD that occur with HSCT. Though the reality remains that prevention of severe thalassemia by carrier detection and counselling is the true way forward, gene therapy can offer hope for many patients in the future . Thanks to the organisers of PHOCON Jammu presented a talk on gene therapy in thalassemia. (Gene therapy is currently not being done in India and the exorbitant cost is a major barrier)

The survival of children with cancer in low and middle income countries still lags behind what's seen in high income countries. One effective way to bridge this gap is to support the nutrition of children during therapy. Got the wonderful opportunity to talk on intervention for children with cancer with malnutrition at PHOCON Jammu 2024.
