PRESS RELEASE

The All India Meghalaya Medicos Association (AIMMA) come out strongly in support of the senior gynaecologist, Dr Dolan S R Marak who was arrested at Williamnagar in connection with alleged Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) of a minor girl. The association members had been informed by reliable sources and the family members regarding the incident that whatever came out in the media and allegations made against him were absolutely incorrect and fabricated. The reliable sources informed that the termination of pregnancy was not performed at all on the minor girl and the foetus is still viable, for which they have conclusive evidence. The minor girl as informed had come to the private clinic only to seek a test for pregnancy confirmation. The victim girl failed to inform the doctor that she was a minor and was a victim of sexual harassment. The doctor after examining the patient had in good faith only advised her of the Injection Tetanus toxoid (TT), which is as per routine medical protocol and then asked her to come for a follow up check-up. The male person who accompanied the victim girl had also identified themselves as a couple.

The Association dismissed the media reports and the fabricated story that the victim had continuous bleeding and cramps only following from the MTP. The bleeding during any time of pregnancy can occur naturally as a result of pregnancy complications per se. The reliable sources and the family members had also informed the association that till date no particular FIR against the doctor had been lodged as there is no evidence to indicate that MTP was performed on the minor girl. The doctor is being held in police custody as implication of the case which is absolutely uncalled for and illegal.

As an Association, we expressed deep anguish and perturb that a senior gynaecologist of his repute is being victimized and treated as a criminal for merely performing his bounden duties towards the life of the people. We condemned this illegal mis-adventurism at the possible highest level and also at the same time rue that such dirty incidents against doctors will have adverse implications which will make doctors irresolute and demoralize them in performing their duties efficiently. The mishandling of the whole incident has thrown the entire medical profession in a bad shape in general and the doctor in particular. In the light of these facts, we as an association in one strongest voice called for the unconditional immediate release of our colleague.
