On the crisp morning of December 5th, with anticipation swirling in the air, I embarked on a journey to Jorhat, a city renowned for its extensive tea gardens, serving as the nerve centre of the tea industry with purpose where a new chapter awaited me. To assume the prestigious role of Professor and Head of the Department of Surgery. As the plane soared through the boundless expanse of the sky, I felt a flutter of excitement mingled with a tinge of nervousness.
Upon touchdown at 2 PM, I found myself at the doorstep of the warm embrace of Jetuki guest house, a sanctuary amidst the bustling city. With a quick check-in, I hastened to the college, eager to commence my new chapter. There, I met the dynamic Principal, Dr. Ratna Kumar Talukdar, a paragon of efficiency who has meticulously prepared all necessary documents alongside Mr Sabhapandit. In a whirlwind of efficiency, papers were signed, introductions made, and I assumed my new role in a swift and seamless transition that lasted a mere ten minutes, a testament to the professionalism and dedication.
With the department office closed for the day, I retreated to the comforting embrace of the guest house, my mind abuzz with anticipation for the days ahead. The dawn of the next morning brought with it a flurry of introductions as I met with faculty, students, and staff, each interaction a testament to the warmth and fellow feelings that permeated the department.
A ceremony orchestrated with precision by Dr. Manab and Dr. Nilotpal welcomed me into the fold, a gesture that touched my heart and reaffirmed my belief in the power of unity and collaboration. But as swiftly as I had arrived, duty called me away to Silchar, then onwards to Vizag for a national conference, where I shared my expertise as a faculty member, enriching my own knowledge amidst the gathering of brilliant minds.
Returning to Jorhat, I immersed myself in the daily rhythms of office life, marveling at the dedication and empathy displayed by every member of the team. From intricate surgeries to moments of quiet camaraderie, each day brought with it new challenges and triumphs, all buoyed by the unwavering support of my colleagues. I found solace in the steadfast dedication of the staff, whose unwavering commitment to patient care echoed the very essence of empathy and honour. Amidst the operating theatre, I witnessed the brilliance of skilled hands and compassionate hearts, forging trust and friendship that transcended the boundaries of duty.
As I reflect upon my time in Jorhat, I am filled with gratitude for the kindness and hospitality extended to me by all. The dedication to patient care and the persuit of excellence in academia were evident at every turn, a testament to the unwavering commitment of all involved.
My journey in Jorhat was not just about professional growth; it was a tapestry woven with the threads of friendship and shared experiences. In the hallowed halls of ACME, I forged bonds with kindred spirits like Mainak, Kaberi, Anuja, and Chandana, whose unwavering support bolstered me through every trial and triumph.
As the days turned into weeks, I found solace in the warm embrace of Jetuki, my sanctuary amidst the bustling city. The tantalizing aromas of Assamese cuisine, lovingly prepared by Lakhya and Olpona, became a comforting reminder of home. Evenings spent in the company of Dr. Manab and occasional visits from Dr Pasoni and Dr Pradip, my classmate and neighbour now, added a touch of familiarity to my days, weaving a tapestry of cherished memories that I will carry with me always.
Now, as I prepare to bid farewell to Jorhat, my heart swells with gratitude for the friendships forged, the lessons learned, and the memories shared. Though my time here may be drawing to a close, the indelible imprint of this journey will linger, a testament to the beauty of new beginnings and the enduring spirit of friendship, community and shared people.
As the sands of time continue their relentless march, I find myself at a crossroads, where duty to family and devotion to profession converge in a delicate balance. My advancing years, coupled with the loving responsibility I bear towards my aged mother of 88, my ever supportive wife and my daughter weigh heavy upon my heart.
In recognition of the deep bond that binds me to my family, but not from a desire to shirk my duties, but rather from a heartfelt yearning to remain steadfast in my commitment to the noble art of teaching I have requested for a consideration in reassigning my posting to Silchar.
The geographical distance that separates me from my beloved family presents a formidable obstacle, requiring a two-day journey to reach their side, whether traversing the winding roads via Guwahati or the bustling thoroughfares through Kolkata. Such distances, though not insurmountable, pose significant challenges, particularly in instances requiring swift action or urgent attention.
In seeking this relocation, I harbor no illusions of escaping the demands of my profession; rather, I seek a compromise that allows me to continue nurturing the flame of knowledge while honoring the sacred bonds of kinship. It is a delicate balance, one that I tread with reverence and humility, mindful of the sacrifices made by those who have walked this path before me.
In the quiet moments of reflection, as I pen these words with a heart heavy with both duty and longing, I am reminded of the timeless wisdom that teaches us to cherish the ties that bind us to home and hearth. It is with this steadfast conviction that I await the decision, hopeful that they may see fit to grant my humble plea, allowing me to continue my vocation with renewed vigor and purpose, all while remaining close to those who hold the key to my heart.
