Ayya Nadar who by his ingenius skill and pioneering efforts laid foundation for the development of Match Industries which later took roots in and around Sivakasi as cottage industries. The industrial impulse which was inherent in him sparked off to start a fireworks industry later. The National Fireworks Factory which was started by him acquired massive growth during mid-twentieth century and its trade mark ‘Lion Brand’ registered deeply in the minds of the people all over the country because of its quality. The spectacular Fireworks Show which the factory displayed at the closing ceremony of the Asian Games held in New Delhi bear testimony to its brilliance and superior quality. Ayyan Fireworks Factory (P) Ltd., is an offshoot of the erstwhile National Fireworks Factory. It was regeistered by the certificate of incorporation No.11673 of 1985 under register of companies Madras (Chennai). The Research and Development (R&D) laboratory has been functioning with the following objectives.
1. To carry out a systematic scientific study of materials capable of undergoing a self-sustained chemical reaction producing heat and often gases by controlling their rates in such a manner as to produce a striking, distinct and visual fireworks effect.
2. To study the reactivity of the substances used in fireworks industry and to make suitable modifications to counter the acceleration of reactions leading to accidental and spontaneous ignition.
3. To find suitable toxic-free substitutes for such chemicals as may prove to be toxic and deterrent to environment by carrying out intensive research work.
4. To acquire safety information in major three areas viz. Health, Flammability and Reactivity by undertaking comprehensive research wok on materials used in fireworks industry and to bring such informations to the notice of the workers employed in the factory.
5. To seek further chemical hazard information that can be found in the ‘Hazardous Chemicals Desk Reference(HCDR)
6. To reduce the cost of production by formulating calculated quantities of the ingredients in fireworks composition using stoichiometric equations of reactions.
7. To set standards in fireworks by devising indigenous technology in producing sparkling flashes, splash of colours, glitters, crackling effect, flickering strobes and a spray of beautiful sparks imparting panoramic view to the on-lookers bringing immense joy and happiness.
8. To explore all forms of danger while bursting of fireworks materials and to alter the mechanism and composition in such manner that the roar of sharp thunder, blinding brilliancy of flash powders, the emanating gaseous products and other undesirable emissions do not exceed the tolerant limit of the ISI specifications and thus to produce eco-friendly fireworks.
9. To find out biodegradable methods for the disposal of the fireworks waste materials without affecting the environment.
10. To develop items like fuzee matches, bicord strips, hand grenade, hand flare signals, smoke etc., for industrial uses and for military purposes.
11. To produce quality fireworks products which are classic in performance so that they can complete in the global market and earn foreign exchange for our country thereby contributing to the nation’s economy. The products manufactured are tested in the R&D laboratory and the quality of the items assessed on a daily basis. Defects found, if any, are brought to the notice of the fireworks factory for taking immediate remedial measures. In this way we maintain quality in fireworks. Safety Measures:
i. Much attention is paid to safety aspects as suggested by Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO), Government of India, Department of Industrial Safety and Health and District Revenue Authorities. The quality of the raw-materials are analyzed before they are used in the fireworks products
iii. To create Safety Awareness among workers periodical meetings are conducted by inviting experts in the field of safety. Supervisors are deputed to undergo training programme conducted by Department of Industrial Safety and Health and Educational Institutions. Supervisors are also deputed to participate in seminars / workshops / conferences organized by PESO and other Institutions
Awards and Honours:
The company has received two Safety Awards Certificates and One Shield from the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Department of Industrial Safety and Health, Chennai, in the year 2008 and 2009 for implementing Safety Measures to avoid accidents in the factories.
