Postpartum Body Image Challenges!

Everyone’s postpartum journey is different but what a lot of mothers can unite in is the fact that pregnancy although a beautiful journey can also be a hard journey after you have brought life into this world.

A lot of women suffer from postpartum depression, anxiety and also body image issues. A lot of mothers juggle work family life with the pressure of also maintaining or getting back to the pre-pregnancy body.

Every morning when I look in the mirror, I am grateful for the body that gave me my son but every morning I also wish I could go back to the pre-pregnancy body.

I try and be gentle on myself but when well meaning relatives and family friends try and keep reminding you that you have lost your body and you need to get back in shape it makes you feel ashamed and that you are not working hard enough. But then I’ll look at my boy and I remind myself that I need to honour the vessel that brought this beautiful life into this world. I need to accept my body Fuel with the things that make it happy and respect this journey that I’m on.

I have been thinking of uploading this video about postpartum awareness and my personal journey but my busy schedule after *giving birth *has been a hindrance . *Despite being * a mental health professional, I too struggled with anxiety during this phase. You may have noticed that I was rushing through the video and that was because I could hear my baby cooing in the background. Between recording I paused to calm him down, this is a genuine portrayal of postpartum depression and anxiety. My son is always in the back of my mind even when I try and do other tasks. New mothers ,please be easy on yourself and take care of your mental health and happiness for baby's sake.I firmly believe that a happy mother leads to happy baby.I appreciate Aibatphida* Counselling Psychologist from Shillong for sharing my journey in her Instagram page mentalhealth, Shillong.
