District Health Society South Andaman - National Health Mission Implementation of the activities of National Health Mission to improve health facilities in the South Andaman District

Recognizing the importance of Health in the process of economic and social development and improving the quality of life of our citizens, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India has launched the National Rural Health Mission in the year 2005 as vision to carry out necessary architectural correction in the basic health care delivery system. The Mission adopts a synergistic approach by relating health to determinants of good health viz. segments of nutrition, sanitation, hygiene and safe drinking water. It also aims at mainstreaming the Indian systems of medicine to facilitate health care. To implement the NRHM program in A&N Union Territory State Health Society has been constituted under the Chairmanship of Chief Secretary A&N Administration and at District level District Health societies has been constituted under the Chairmanship of respective Deputy Commissioners and established the office of District Programme Management Unit (DPMU) in the premises of District Office. An IEC-cum-ENT Screening & Disability Camp along with a Newborn Hearing Screening Camp under NPPCD was successfully conducted on 12.03.2026 at PHC Shaheed Dweep under the leadership of Dr. Ganesh Samaddar, Joint Secretary (NPPCD). The camp was facilitated by Dr. Sri Lekha Bandaru (ENT Specialist), Shri Suprit Kumar Meher (Audiologist), and Shri P. Mohammed Sabib (Programme Assistant, NPPCD). A total of 23 ENT screenings and 01 newborn hearing screening were conducted during the camp.

World Hearing Day was celebrated at GMS Chouldari under PHC Chouldari. The programme began with a welcome address by Mr. Raju Prasad, MPHW, who highlighted the significance of the day. Smti. Yashu Meri, PHN, explained this year’s theme, “From communities to classrooms: Hearing care for all children – Act now so no child is left behind due to ear or hearing problems.” Dr. Priya Sara Biji, MO, elaborated on common ear problems and their treatment. Hearing screening was conducted for the children, and a total of 80 participants attended the programme. Refreshments were distributed to all. The programme was conducted under the guidance of Dr. C. Sabeela Banu, MO I/C, PHC Chouldari.

An awareness programme was conducted on 03.03.2026 at PHC Hutbay OPD premises on the occasion of World Hearing Day under the theme “Changing mindsets: Empower yourself to make ear and hearing care a reality for all.” A health talk was delivered to educate the public on the importance of ear and hearing care, prevention of hearing loss, reduction of stigma related to hearing impairment, and promotion of regular hearing check-ups. Participants were advised to avoid loud music and prolonged earphone use, use ear protection in noisy environments, and keep ears clean and dry. Hearing screening was also conducted, and the programme was successfully completed under the supervision of Dr. Rajni Tiwari, MO I/c, PHC Hutbay.
