Kashmir and epidemic( Javid Makhdoomi)
After "Harud" (autumn) many Kashmiris, as per past practice, would migrate to planes of Punjab and engage in daily labour to mitigate pathetic poverty. During last week of March, 1926 while the labourers were returning back from Punjab, plague suddenly descended on a village located near Sangam (earstwhile district Anantnag). Almost every household got affilicted and contributed in the surge of number of dead. The epidemic started to spread its ugly tentacles to neighborhood i.e, Marhama. The administration responded to the worsening situation by deploying police, doctors and para-medics who promptly established pickets outside affected villages. As a part of administrative action more than two dozen houses and a mosque were set on fire. Ingress and egress was strictly regulated which helped in improving the situation.
