China has achieved a sci-fi milestone: the first direct 5G satellite-to-smartphone video call—using a normal phone with no special satellite gear. The test used a new demo satellite under the global 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) standard, meaning future satellite internet could work seamlessly with everyday smartphones worldwide.

This is part of China’s massive Guowang internet megaconstellation plan, aiming to launch 13,000 satellites to provide true global coverage—from crowded cities to remote mountains. Imagine live-streaming from anywhere without cell towers.
