Congenital Absence of the Ear (Microtia/Anotia) , Let’s Understand It
Did you know some babies are born with a partial or complete absence of the external ear? This rare condition is called Microtia (when the ear is small or underdeveloped) or Anotia (when the ear is completely missing).
It usually occurs during the early weeks of pregnancy, when the ear fails to develop properly. Causes may include genetic factors, certain medications during pregnancy, or unknown developmental interruptions.
Key Facts:
Can affect one or both ears (unilateral is more common).
Hearing may be affected depending on whether the inner ear structures are involved.
Often associated with other craniofacial syndromes.
Treatment Options:
Hearing support: Bone-anchored hearing aids (BAHA) or other assistive devices.
Reconstructive surgery: Usually performed between ages 6to10, using cartilage or artificial implants.
Speech therapy: For children with hearing difficulties to ensure normal speech development.
Early diagnosis, supportive care, and a multidisciplinary team (ENT, plastic surgeon, audiologist, speech therapist) can make a huge difference in quality of life.
Every child is unique , and beauty comes in all shapes and forms. Raising awareness helps reduce stigma and ensures timely treatment.
