Mind Your "Mind" The Ayurvedic Way
ātmānaṁ rathinaṁ viddhi
śarīraṁ ratham eva ca
buddhiṁ tu sārathiṁ viddhi
manaḥ pragraham eva ca
All human beings are the passages of a car, a car whose structure is a human domain and intelligence is the driver .Mind can be termed as the driving instrument ,and the senses are the horses. The human mind is in full control of his/her intelligence. But, one must not underestimate the power of mind, its stubbornness might takeover the control from intelligence . Speaking of this modern era, humans have developed technically but have degraded culturally. By culture, we mean the ancient knowledge which our ancestors left for us is now been not utilized. We might tag ourselves with the tag of modern people but if a person analyzes these fact, our ancestors where much more wiser and smarter then us. After all one cannot capture the blowing wind and is even more difficult to capture the turbulentmind.
The above shloka of Srimad Bhagwatgeeta explains the connection of mind with the body and also emphasizes on the power of mind.
We are living in a world of insecurities, depression, jealousy, mostly the negative agents. Convention psychiatry and psychology are proving themselves inefficient in healing the mind, which has been constantly overloaded with stress!! Convention psychiatric practices are based on the symptoms of suppression and drugs. These practices causes serious side effects, and have prompted people plagued by mental illness to go for alternative and holistic healings.
Ayurveda is a holistic approach to mental health. It explains mental health as a state of mental, intellectual, and spiritual well being.
Our mind is functionally divided into Ahankaar(ego) ,Iccha (desire, will) and Buddhi (intelligence).Ichha is directed by ‘Ahankaar’. Buddhi,or the intellect takes the decision.
Our body and mind is goverened by tridosha and triguna (satva, rajas, tamas).Equillibrium of Tridosha ,dhatu(7 elements),Agni( Digestive Capacity), mala(waste Byproducts), sound functioning of atma (soul),indriyas(Senses),mana(mind) leads to good health.
Physical health and mental health depends upon each other for a smooth functioning ,for example a person is having fever ,or any other physical ailment cannot focus his mind on his work ; similarly a person having stress due to many factors like diet of his/her lifestyle leads to hypertension and diabetes.
Incidences like su***de , depression ,anxiety disorder, sleep disorders , are on rise .To fight these insecurities youngsters are either moving toward drugs or opting for conventional system of medicine to ward off the diseases.
Ayurveda, our ancient system of medicine is a perfect solution for these issues. Right from the stages of prevention to the stages of cure, each and every step is explained and has solution for it.

Prevention and cure
While explaining the treatment of various ailments in Ayurveda ,it is said that chikitsa is divided into two parts
Adravyabhoot chikitsa
Dravyabhoot chiktsa
In adravyabhootchiktsa while treating mental disorders, priority on prevention of disease is given more emphasis . As we know more than 90% of diseases are caused because of wrong life style .So for that Dincharya(daily rules and regimens) Ritucharya(rules and regimens to be followed in particular Ritu) and good code of conduct (sadachaar) in a society are also explained .
It also includes the mantra chiktsa and different rituals.Mantra chiktsa and various rituals (yagya and hoam) not only channelize the energy of body and focus the mind but also creates a positive environment which is very helpful in treating the patient with mental illness.
Yoga is also a part of adravyabhootchikitsa. It is said that “yogastu chittavriti nirodh”.Yoga helps in controlling the chitta(mana) and there vishaya.
Dravyabhoot chiktsa includes the medicine and herbs which we give to a patient for the proper functioning of brain internally and externally. Vacha, brahmi ,shankhpushpi, guduchi and numerous other herbal drugs and various classical preparation like smritisagar ras ,unmaadgajakesariras, saraswatarishta, are given in classical text but, to be taken strictly under the supervision of qualified Ayurveda practitioner.External application of medicated oil in the form of siroabhyanga, sirobasti, manya basti, nasyam and abhyanga are also included in that.
Failure and loss are part of life. We can never run away from problems, we can only defeat them by facing them ; and that can be only done when we take our mind and body to next level. It is said in Ayurveda classical text “dhee dhairya atmaadigyanam manodoshaushadham param”(intellect,Patience and perseverance and self analysation is key to all mental disorders.
Past gives us pain sometimes and thought of future gives us anxiety, so best possible way to achieve peace is to live in present. Even if we fail just remember failure is first step in achieving the victory. Consider yourself winner every time , failure inspires winners and defeat loosers.
