***WORLD BRAIN TUMOUR DAY***

🚩World Brain Tumour Day was first observed on June 8th, 2000, initiated by the German Brain Tumour Association (Deutsche Hirntumorhilfe).

🏵️Since then, it has grown into a global event, observed in multiple countries to foster understanding and compassion for brain tumour patients.

🎉"Equity in Care and Research: Leaving No One Behind" is the theme for this year.

🏵️Symptoms include:

Persistent headaches, often worse in the morning

Nausea or vomiting without a clear cause

Seizures

Blurred or double vision

Personality or behavioural changes

Difficulty with balance or coordination

Memory loss or confusion

Speech difficulties

Weakness or numbness in limbs

🚩 Treatment options:

🎊Surgical removal is often the first and most effective treatment for many brain tumours, especially when the tumour is accessible and located in a non-critical area of the brain.

🏵️The goal is to remove as much of the tumour as safely possible without damaging surrounding brain tissue.

🪔Other options include: Chemotherapy, Radiation,Targeted therapies,Immunotherapy and Palliative care.

"A STITCH IN TIME SAVES NINE"

This 61y/male patient had come to us with M5 status and dilated right pupil-CT revealed large Right MCA infarct with midline shift-ICP raised drastically.

He was intubated and immediately taken up for Emergency Decompressive Craniectomy by me and my team.

Post operatively, the mass effect on the brain resolved as shown in the scan on the right.

Patient got extubated today and obeying commands, well on the road to recovery.

***WORLD CANCER DAY-4TH FEBRUARY***

🚩World Cancer Day is an international day observed every 4 th February to raise awareness about cancer, encourage its prevention, and mobilise action to address the global cancer epidemic.

🚩All Brain cancers are tumours but all Brain Tumours are not cancerous.

🚩 About 1/3rd of brain tumours are malignant, most common Brain cancers being Metastases and Glioblastoma.

🎉Glioblastoma is a kind of cancer that starts in cells in your brain and spinal cord called astrocytes. Astrocytes support your nerve cells. Glioblastoma cancer cells grow and multiply quickly. The cancer invades and destroys healthy surrounding tissue.

🎉Depending on the CNS WHO Molecular classification, gliomas are prognosticated.

🎉Advances in Neurosurgical techniques and innovations like Neuronavigation,Exoscopes,High Resolution Microscopes, Neuromomitoring have made Brain Tumour Surgery relatively safer and more effective, than it used to be 25 years back.

🎉Available treatment modalities for operable lesions include Surgery with Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy, depending upon the nature of the tumour and clinical status of the patient.

"Academics and Neurosurgery"

Neurosurgery as we all know,is indeed a challenging work! Not only does it involve operating cases at odd hours, but also, choosing the right corridors for approaching the pathology,be it a schwannoma sitting smugly in the cerebellopontine angle or an intradural extramedullary tumour attached to the depths of the spinal cord. Each time, the aim is to achieve maximal safe resection with minimal neurodeficits to the patient.
In such a high pressure job,the stakes are also very high.Hence
it becomes imperative to constantly keep on upgrading our knowledge and stay abreast with the latest and advanced neurosurgical techniques.

How do you keep your skills up to date in your profession?
Comments are invited.

Adopting healthy spine habits is not too tough a task! Just follow the mnemonic "SPINE":

S-mart lifting techniques:avoid slouching, prefer to bend the knees while lifting objects.

P-roper posture:sitting on a chair with a back support

I-ntake of adequate water and Calcium and Vitamin D rich food

N-o to smoking:Smoking reduces blood flow to the spine and accelerates degenerative disc disease

E-xercise regularly,low-impact exercises like walking, swimming, or yoga improve flexibility and strength without putting too much strain on your back.
