Suicidal thoughts, much like mental health conditions, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or background. In fact, su***de is often the result of an untreated mental health condition. Suicidal thoughts, although common, should not be considered normal and often indicate more serious issues.

September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month —a time to raise awareness of this stigmatized, and often taboo, topic. We use this month to shift public perception, spread hope and share vital information to people affected by su***de.

Our goal is ensuring that individuals, friends and families have access to the resources they need to discuss su***de prevention and to seek help.

You may manage your connection with your parents by establishing boundaries, whether you still reside at home or are living independently

- Do not assume responsibility for their needs or feelings. Guilt may be a tool used by your toxic parent to coerce you into doing what they want.
(However, it is not your responsibility to ensure their happiness. Don't give up what you want or do things only to make them happy)

- You are the only person you can alter. Stop attempting to influence them. Instead, concentrate on what you can do to improve your relationship-related feelings.

- It's normal to believe what your parents tell you, even if they say some pretty unpleasant things to you. Speak kind words to yourself after your parents say unpleasant things to you/about you.

Culturally, society has developed a stigma, particularly amongst males, that mental illness is a trait of the weak-minded. Although depression is linked to chemical changes in the brain and thus physical changes in the body, it is still very challenging to break these skewed and deep-rooted beliefs. That said, mental health plays an extremely vital role in our body’s overall wellness, which is why seeking professional help is extremely important.

Good relationships don’t just happen. They take time, patience and two people who truly want to be together.

Love should be conscious and intentional. —

It’s inevitable that all loving relationships will have their fair share of ups and downs.

At such times, the commitment component is all or almost all that keeps the relationship afloat. The level of commitment to a relationship can be very pivotal in getting through hard times and for returning to better ones.

Commitment is that component of loving relationships that enables one to get through the hard times and also the easy ones. Ignoring or separating it from a relationship can be very fatal during hard times or when having relationship conflicts.

Effort in a relationship means showing affection
To know that your partner loves you is one thing. To witness it and feel it another. And not getting to feel this way for long can make anyone feel unwanted. That is why quite often showing love is as important as feeling it.

Abandonment issues stem from a fear of loneliness, which can be a phobia or a form of anxiety. These issues can affect your relationships and often stem from a childhood loss. Other factors that turn loss into abandonment issues include environmental and medical factors, genetics, and brain chemistry.

Early childhood experiences are the biggest contributor to developing abandonment issues when you become an adult. The traumatic event might include the loss of a parent by divorce or death or not getting enough physical or emotional care as a child. Emotional abandonment occurs when parents:

- Do not let their children express themselves emotionally
- Ridicule their children
- Put too much pressure on their children to be “perfect”
- Treat their children like their peers
Abandonment issues happen when a parent or caregiver does not provide the child with consistent warm or attentive interactions, leaving them feeling chronic stress and fear. The experiences that happen during a child’s development will often continue into adulthood.

This is why abandonment issues become more prevalent as you get older and can affect your relationships.

Working on abandonment issues:
the first step is understanding what triggers you and learning to withdraw when these triggers come up. You should also try to get more comfortable with having conversations about your fears in a calm and respectful manner. It may help to do this with a partner, family member, or close friend. It may be difficult at first, but you will find it gets easier with time.

In therapy, you will be able to explore the root cause of your fears and identify negative thought patterns. Your therapist will help you replace them with healthy, more realistic thoughts. Your relationship with your therapist can also give you the sense of having a secure relationship. Working with them, you can learn to establish healthy boundaries in your relationships and help avoid behaviors that hinder healthy relationships.

This is something I have personally struggled with and still do. Therapy, consciousness and self work is not a linear process.
Adults who experience a fear of abandonment may struggle with a preoccupied attachment style. They frequently anticipate rejection and search for signs of disinterest from their partner. They may feel triggered by even subtle or imagined signs of rejection from their partner based on the real rejections they experienced in their childhood. As a result, they may act possessive, controlling, jealous, or clingy toward their partner. They may often seek reassurance or display distrust.

However, their excessive dependency, demands and possessiveness tend to backfire and precipitate the very abandonment that they fear.

More on how this can be worked and worked on in the next post>
