Did you know that India has the world’s largest burden of corneal , with over 1.1 million people awaiting transplants? To address this urgent need, the Department of , , conducted the 40th National Eye Donation Fortnight Celebrations from 25th August to 8th September under guidelines.
The celebrations included impactful activities such as a play, awareness at RK Beach, competition for optometry students, and a screening & camp at MK Gold Coast. These events helped spread awareness of the importance of eye donation in reducing corneal blindness.
The valedictory function was graced by Dr. Gitanjali Batmanabane (Pro VC), Dr. Suryaprakash Rao (Dean, GIMSR), and Dr. G. Sambasiva Rao (Addl. Medical Superintendent). HOD Dr. V.V.L. Narasimha Rao highlighted the importance of regular awareness initiatives, while leaders emphasized the need for training in corneal retrieval and strengthening GIMSR’s eye services.
Through such initiatives, GIMSR not only strengthens its outreach but also reinforces its academic rigor. With 100+ events celebrated annually, GIMSR continues to stand at the forefront of advancing and medical in the region.
