«شوجین» یا مرحله ای از دوران آموزشی است که در آن خواستن و کوشش آگاهانه هردو دخالت دارند .
‎این مدت شامل سه تا پنج سال کوشش زیاد و مستمر میشود .
‎در ذن این دوره اول با « شی هو » به معنای عبور با انتقال می باشد .

‎دومین مرحله دورانی از تمرکز و تفکراست که بدون آگاهی صورت گرفته و بعد از شی هوا می باشد .
‎در این دوره دانشجو در مرحله آرامش بوده و حتی می تواند به عنوان دستیار برای استاد ، جهت هدفهای آموزشی مورد استفاده قرار بگیرد .
‎در مراحل پیشرفته تر او می تواند خود استاد شده و مستقل آموزش دیگران را به عهده بگیرد.

‎در مرحله سوم روح به آزادی و رهایی واقعی می رسد و برای یک روح آزاد شده ، یک جهان آزاد و رها شده پدیدار می گردد این مراحل سه گانه در ذن و هنرهای رزمی به صورت مشابهی وجود دارند.
‎در تمام طول این مدت طولانی، یک تغییر و انحراف شدید در دیدگاه فرد نسبت به آنچه که در هنرهای رزمی از اولویت و اهمیت بیشتری برخوردار هستند ، به چشم می خورد :
‎از تکنیک و قدرت جسمانی در شروع کار ، به اشراف کامل و سرانجام آزادی روح .

We often see in jidai geki (period dramas) how put a bloody thumb-print seal (血判 keppan) below their name on a document in order to strongly express sincerity about the content; this was done on petitions, vows, confidential agreements, and so on. For instance, Ōishi Kuranoske (the leader of the ) wanted to confirm the members' commitment by asking them to return their pledges blood-sealed.

The shown in and on tv is that the wakizashi is pulled out of its a few inches, and the left thumb is pressed down on the edge. I always wondered why it was done that way, besides looking really cool, of course. We all know how many nerve endings our have, and how painful it is to get a cut there; it also takes forever to heal. And from a more practical standpoint, one gets blood on the , and might be impaired to handle a properly with the thumb.

While going through the book 日本刀の総合美 nihontō no sōgōbi by 飯山嘉昌 Iiyama Yoshimasa, I found out that we’re indeed – and again - a victim of Hollywood (or, in this case maybe Tōei Studios): in reality the kozuka/kogatana was used to make a small cut on the top of the ring finger, and then the thumb was put on the wound to transfer the . Kind of cumbersome, and completely lacking the coolness factor, but makes perfect sense.
