In common thinking, are often associated solely with and . However, their spectrum is much broader, encompassing a wide range of unhealthy behaviors and conditions related to food and nutrition.
As we approach World Eating Disorders Action Day on June 2, we want to broaden the collective perspective by discussing "other" eating disorders, helping to raise awareness and foster understanding.
Here are a few lesser-known, but not less relevant, eating disorders that we may happen to treat here at Reach Aut.
is characterized by recurring episodes of binge eating, although without compensatory behaviors such as vomiting, as seen in bulimia.
(an acronym for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) refers to food avoidance and reduced eating behaviors connected to sensory sensitivities or other concerns. Unlike anorexia, however, it is not linked to worries about body image.
is a disorder marked by the compulsion to ingest non-nutritive, non-food substances over an extended period of time, tipically at least a month.
is an excessive obsession with "perfect" and healthy eating, which can lead to extreme dietary restrictions and, consequently, to social isolation.
Whatever the disorder, understanding symptoms and seeking support is extremely important. Therapy or other interventions may help in overcoming or managing these conditions.
