Seeing the Whole Picture of Health 🌍

Rolfing® Structural Integration isn't just about pain relief—it's about invoking health.
Rolfing sees the human as an interconnected whole rather than focusing on isolated symptoms of the body. Through the Rolfing Ten-Series, we work to align your body within gravity, addressing not just where it hurts, but why it hurts. 🌀

As Certified Advanced Rolfer® Alan Richardson highlights in his article on Rolfing Holism, this approach empowers clients to feel resilient, grounded, and deeply connected to their well-being. ✨

When people come to Rolfers™, they frequently complain about their high level of stress and how it affects their everyday life. They are seeking some means of reducing their stress. Often, they have explored allopathic means such as muscle relaxants, painkillers, liniments, balms and other topical treatments. When these treatments fail to achieve a satisfactory level of improvement, those still suffering seek other forms of relief such as exercise, meditation and yoga..

They may also seek a myofascial (neuromuscular) solution and start receiving regular massages or some other similar soft tissue therapy. In many cases, these therapies are good at providing transitory relief of the physical causes of chronic stress. Those seeking a more permanent solution to the problem are more likely to have success with Rolfing® Structural Integration.

Rolfing SI creates a higher level of integration in the body, balancing and educating the body and the psyche. As the body approaches balance, it is more comfortable in the gravitational field. As the body becomes more comfortable, physical and emotional stress can diminish. This chain of events is a more typical sequence of events as a body changes during the Rolfing process. Ultimately, however, the results as experienced by the client are more important than the process.

Rolfing® Structural Integration and massage are two widely recognized forms of bodywork, each with its unique approach, philosophy, techniques, and impact on the body. While they may seem similar on the surface and both aim to improve overall health, delving into their fundamental principles reveals distinct differences that cater to diverse individual needs.

Booking a Rolfing or Myofascial Release session can be a great way to relieve discomfort and alleviate pain, such as back pain, neck pain, or shoulder pain. These forms of bodywork provide immediate relief and long-lasting results, helping you move with better agility and reduced pain.
Rolfing is a holistic approach that addresses the entire body throughout ten sessions, making it particularly effective for those seeking comprehensive relief. On the other hand, Myofascial Release is a Rolfing SI-based technique that specifically targets the "target area" of pain.
From personal experience, I can attest to the benefits of Rolfing. I felt like I got ten years back from my body and was able to do activities with ease that I previously avoided due to pain. Whether you need relief after a long drive or want to improve your mobility, booking a Rolfing or Myofascial Release session can be an excellent decision for your overall wellness.

I want to thank Russell Stolzoff for sharing this beautiful poem. It's an excellent and evocative piece of writing and reminded me of session 2 of the Rolfing 10 series. During this session, we focus on the feet, walking, and the relationship with the ground.

START CLOSE IN

Start close in,
don’t take
the second step
or the third,
start with the first
thing
close in,
the step
you don’t want to take.

Start with
the ground
you know,
the pale ground
beneath your feet,
your own
way to begin
the conversation.

Start with your own
question,
give up on other
people’s questions,
don’t let them
smother something
simple.

To hear
another’s voice,
follow
your own voice,
wait until
that voice
becomes an
intimate
private ear
that can
really listen
to another.

Start right now
take a small step
you can call your own,
don’t follow
someone else’s
heroics, be humble
and focused,
start close in,
don’t mistake
that other
for your own.

Start close in,
don’t take
the second step
or the third,
start with the first
thing
close in,
the step
you don’t want to take.

A New Year’s poem, if ever there was one. Carrying that certain air of self-admonition we all need to go in the right direction, and do the right thing. This piece was inspired by my growing familiarity with Dante's 'Comedia', particularly the first lines, written in despair after being exiled from his beloved Florence. It reflects the difficult act we all experience, of trying to start again when everything has been taken away; the necessity of stepping bravely again, into what looks like a dark wood, when the outer world as we know it has disappeared, when the world can only be met and in some ways made again from no outer ground, but from the very center of our being. The temptation is to take the second or third step outer step, not the first inward one, to ignore the invitation into the center of our own body, often into the source of our grief and our reluctance: an attempt to finesse the raw vulnerability and the absolutely necessary understanding at the core of the pattern, to forgo the radical and almost miraculous simplification into which we are being invited. For a better, truer New Year - the invitation is always, always, always, to 'Start close In.'
