📢 We are pleased to announce publication of the EASO Algorithm for the pharmacological treatment of obesity and its complications in Nature Medicine.
This important new paper builds on the recently published EASO Framework for the Diagnosis, Staging and Management of Obesity in Adults and reinforces the concept of obesity as an adiposity-based chronic disease (ABCD).
🌟 Takeaways:
✔️ Obesity is a chronic, relapsing disease with significant impact on both individual health and society and is a gateway to other health impairments, driving complications ranging from mechanical effects such as joint disease and sleep apnoea, to metabolic and inflammatory conditions, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
✔️ Effective obesity management must extend beyond weight reduction alone. A holistic approach is required, addressing complications, supporting mental well-being, improving physical function, and enhancing quality of life. Long-term, multi-component treatment is essential
✔️ Core strategies include behavioural modification, nutrition, physical activity, stress reduction, sleep improvement, psychological support, pharmacotherapy, and—where appropriate—metabolic or bariatric procedures.
✔️ The number of approved medications is growing rapidly, offering distinct mechanisms of action. Prescribing physicians must understand comparative effectiveness and tailor treatment to individual patient needs.
✔️ The new EASO Medication Management Algorithm provides clinicians with practical, evidence-based guidance to match patient profiles with available treatments. It is grounded in rigorous analysis of randomised controlled trials and the EASO obesity framework.
➡️ ➡️ This is a living algorithm, designed to evolve as new scientific evidence emerges, ensuring clinical practice remains aligned with best-in-class obesity care.
