Did you know that the Spanish squat can be used to diagnose and treat damage to the quadriceps and patellar tendon?

These injuries happen when your current loading surpasses your tendons’ current strength tolerance level.

A process known as “degeneration” occurs when little pieces of tendon tissue actually die off if the injury is not appropriately treated and the person keeps pushing despite discomfort.

Research has demonstrated that the Spanish squat, which is performed for 5 repetitions of 45 seconds, can alleviate tendinopathy pain up to 45 minutes after the exercise is completed. It can also stimulate the quadriceps to resume its strength output, which is typically inhibited by pain (a process known as cortical inhibition).

You are probably dealing with a different kind of knee injury (known as patellofemoral pain) if completing these exercises does not reduce your pain afterward and instead makes your knee symptoms worse.

❓What is Dry Cupping ❓

Dry cupping is a type of therapy that originated from China.
Cupping therapy is an ancient modality that we use along with modern treatment. Cups are placed on the skin and the suction creates blood flow. Cupping is not only great for our circulation but also great for muscle tension 💪🏽

👉🏽Benefits

🔹Muscle relaxation
🔹Speeds up recovery
🔹Reduces swelling
🔹Increased blood flow that will help clear congestion and stagnation
🔹Breaks up scar tissue & reduces pain
🔹Removes unwanted by products (like lactic Acids) from the body
🔹Reduces anxiety

Let’s look at the bigger picture…

‼️DO NOT let SHORT TERM SETBACKS distract you from your LONG TERM GOAL.

Throughout the journey, they will be:
👉🏽Fluctuating symptoms
👉🏽Minor flare ups
👉🏽 Some inevitable frustration

But with optimal:
✅Programming
✅Education
✅ Exercise selection
✅ Form modification

You CAN and WILL overcome it!

👉🏽Too often people blaming certain movements for why they have pain.
🫵🏽The only bad position out there is the one you are not prepared for.
🤙🏽So if you sit in a chair all day, have crappy hip and/or spine mobility, have completely lost your hinge pattern THEN try to deadlift - your poor movement patterns are to blame, NOT the movement.
🤟🏽If you have pain, get assessed. This way you can find the problem areas that need to be improved so you can do the activities you want without pain.
📱Comment “PAIN” if you are interested to find out the cause for your musculoskeletal pains and how to fix them.

You can’t see pain on an MRI ‼️

It’s important to remember that just because something appears on a scan, it does not instantly mean that it is the source or explains someone’s pain.

For argument sake, And let’s say it does- what happens next?

Surgery vs Rehab

Regardless of what path is taken, to restore adequate movement and functionality, movement deficiencies must be addressed.

PAIN 😤

When you are in pain, the primary goal and focus shouldn’t be on just ‘killing’ it. The main objective should be figure out the ROOT CAUSE(S) of why it is present, and start addressing those. Pain is complex, but it is ALWAYS telling us something.

💊Painkillers are handed out like candy these days for a variety of reasons. It seems like it is the first line of defence when any sort of pain arises. And we wonder why we have a painkiller epidemic on our hands.

🫥Simply ‘killing’ pain without addressing its root cause is a recipe for disaster in the medium and long term. The obsession with killing pain and treating it as a nuisance may provide temporary relief, but it isn’t a sustainable or wise solution to whatever the actual problem may be.

🔑Pain first needs to be acknowledged for what it is. Pain is evolutionarily meaningful, it isn’t some random annoyance that just happens out of the blue.

🤔It then needs to be used as a guide. Pain is a call for change of some sort, so figuring out what must be changed or altered (behaviours, activities, thoughts, patterns, lifestyle, movements etc.) is fundamental.

➡️The underlying cause(s) may be simple or multi factorial, depending on the situation. Either way, it needs to be figured out and addressed to truly deal with pain in a sustainable way.

👍🏽Whether you are seeing a health professional or solving it yourself, make sure that the emphasis isn’t just on killing the pain, but on solving it and getting to its roots.

💯Yes, painkillers do have their place...but not as the solution to a pain problem, because they aren’t.

👉🏽“Pain is a perception, not a sensation” Mick Thacker

It is extremely complex and it doesn’t have a direct correlation to tissue damage.

This has been shown in research with several literature reviews: high % of individuals showing no pain or issues, but changes in their MRI findings.

What does this mean?
👉🏽YOU ARE NOT YOUR SCAN!

Many individuals show changes in their discs, tendons and cartilage with NO pain.
Many of these changes can be associated to ageing.

❌Don’t stop moving or going your favourite activities simply because something was found on a scan!
Why pain is not a good guide?

👉🏽 You can have pain and no damage.

There an iconic story of a builder who jumped on a nail which pierced his shoe. He was in agony and had to be sedated. But his x-rays showed that the nail missed his foot. It did not pierce of scrape it at all.

👇🏽👇🏽
“Experience subconsciously affects how much we expect to feel pain in conditions suggesting threat or danger. The degree of sensation you feel in that moment is influenced by personal senses of anticipation, anxiety and emotion. So deep down, you already know it’s going to hurt.”

This is what l often see in people who believe certain movements or positions are going to hurt as bending forward, deadlifting or lifting arms overhead.

💯It’s important to re-teach the body that movement is safe and it actually has healing properties for most tissues.

Are you in pain? Are you scared to move?

Context is key 🔑

📌You’re not going to damage yourself if you bend over to pick up a five-pound bag without using “good” form. Why? Because 5 pounds won’t put too much strain on your tissue. indicating that your body is ready to support that weight.

📌The likelihood of injury increases if you bend over to pick up a 200-pound bag without using “good” form and haven’t been warming up for the exercise.

📌Will it be because you weren’t ready for it or because of the movement itself? Most likely the latter.

📌It’s simple to attribute accidents on bad form, but it’s actually more crucial to get yourself ready to handle heavy weights. even though it lacks a “perfect” form.
