The eMOTION Movement is an initiative of Miss Manchester Festival Queen 2015, Chereese Ricketts. The aim is to encourage everyday Jamaicans to be more aware of their mental health while removing the stigma that mental illness carries in our culture. Chereese believes that this is in direct alignment with the Vision 2030 National Development Goal for Jamaicans to be empowered to achieve their fullest potential. The programme targets three main groups: Clients of Mental Institutions, Young Adults in High Schools/Universities, and the wider Community. To provide therapy for Clients in homes for the mentally unstable;
2. To foster strong sense of identity, good self esteem, and healthy relationship patterns among adolescents and young adults in schools; and
3. To support Jamaicans in the achievement of a positive mindset through social media engagement and community events. The first goal to provide therapy in homes for the mentally unstable is already underway with Dance Instructor and Founder Chereese Ricketts conducting weekly movement sessions for the men at the Ebenezer Home for the Mentally Challenged in Manchester. There is a desire to widen this service to other homes and hospitals across the island. The community and school arms of the programme will be launched in July and September 2015, respectively. eMOTION continues to welcome support in the form of expertise, ideas, encouragement, volunteers, cash and kind.
