gulatory authority supervising quality and safety in healthcare. SSCB boasts ten years of experience. SSCB started operating in 2004 and thus ranks among the very first banks in Europe, with nearly 20,000 stored samples. SSCB is truly a bio-bank, not an intermediary. Many cord blood banks – too many – are basically commercial companies that, for sample storage, turn to external labs and storage structures selected on the basis of mere economic considerations, with little or no concern for quality. SSCB performs all the process and storage activities in own labs and structures, located in Switzerland. SSCB is inspired by principles of full transparency and correctness. At the end of the cryopreservation process, SSCB issues a certificate clearly specifying the data of the stored sample: cell vitality, white blood cell count, CD34+ cell count, outcome of serological and microbiological tests. This paramount data, should a transplant be needed, will be crucial to the decision to use the sample or not. With SSCB there are no surprises. Cord Blood Banks are not all the same.

Since the beginning of our activity as a private cord blood bank – it was 2005, and we were among the very first in Europe– we have defined our procedures in compliance with the FACT-Netcord standard, also based on the recommendation of Swissmedic, the Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products.

FACT-NetCord is a non-profit organisation based inOmaha,USA– since 1997, the worldwide benchmark for umbilical cord blood banks, both public and private.

At the end of 2012, after a lengthy and complex certification process, FACT-Netcord officially accredited SSCB and on August 2016 the accreditation has been renewed for 3 years. All over the world, only 54 cord blood banks are currently accredited – the best public donation banks and the best private banks providing autologous storage services. SSCB Swiss Stem Cell Bank is one of the latter.

This is tantamount to saying that, should therapy be needed, a stem cell sample stored at SSCB shall be considered as safe and usable as those stored at the most outstanding public donation banks.
