Yesterday, a member of our sangha, Debra from the Brighton sangha and I went to Shoinji, Hakuin’s temple in Hara.
Hakuin is not well known even in Japan so I wrote a letter to the Abbot of Shoinji telling him that Hakuin is in our Refuge Tree and we study his teachings in Triratna. He was very happy to know and we made good connection with him. He showed us around, served us tea and sweets, told us stories about Hakuin, the temple and his own experience as the 18th Abbot after Hakuin (who was the 5th Abbot). He even sat in meditation with us before he gave us his blessings.
I promised him to come back to see him after my visit to the UK t ok which he replied: “Come back safely”.
I will save Emmyo san’s stories of Hakuin for my trip to the UK.
For now, a very humble connection has been made in the name of Bhante Sangharaksh*ta.
