"Obesity is linked to more than 60 chronic diseases" - --- When the body has excess weight, referred to as obesity, it inhibits some of its normal functions and can lead to health problems. In fact, obesity can put a person at a high risk for many diseases including heart disease, stroke, hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, liver and gallbladder disease, certain cancers such as endometrial, breast, and colon cancer and many more health issues.
- Excess weight can cause a buildup of plaque in the arteries that can lead to coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. Obesity increases blood fats such as triglycerides and cholesterol. It also can add extra weight on the joints causing pain and leading to diseases such as osteoarthritis.
- There can be extra fat around the neck, narrowing the airway and causing sleep apnea. Obesity is an expensive disease and is highly associated with many diseases that are the leading causes of preventable death. In 2008, medical care costs related to obesity reached $147 billion in the US.
