I/ What is Kimono?
Kimono is a type of traditional Japanese dress and is considered the national dress of this country! This is one of the world famous national costumes, known by many people because it is a characteristic culture of the Japanese people. Kimono was born based on the inspiration of ancient Chinese costumes, initially Kimono was worn with Hakama - a type of long skirt that sometimes has a split like baggy pants. After a gradual change, Kimono is no longer worn with Hakama but instead is a scarf - called Obi.
The Japanese have used Kimono costumes for a long time, for both men and women. But gradually due to the introduction of Western culture, they no longer use this costume every day, but only wear it on special occasions of the year, holidays, events...
Kimono has a very beautiful design, through the ingenious hands of people, Kimono costumes are always unique and imbued with Japanese culture. Men's kimonos have a simpler and narrower rim. Women's kimonos often feature floral motifs, leaves and other natural symbols, reflecting the Japanese love of nature.
II/ Meaning of Kimono in Japanese culture
The Japanese keep their traditional culture very well, although Kimono is no longer used as a daily wear, but Japanese people have traditional rules when choosing to wear Kimono.
The Japanese have different types of Kimono and it has the following meanings:
1/ Furisode: Furisode is only for unmarried girls who are ready to get married. When Japanese girls turn 20 years old, they will have an coming of age ceremony and wear a Furisode.
2/ Yukata: Yukata is an ordinary cotton kimono with a simple design that is usually worn in the summer.
3/ Houmongi Kimono: This is the garment of married women, usually worn when attending a wedding or tea party or when receiving a formal visit.
4/ Tomesode Kimono: This is also a Kimono shirt for married women and has a family crest that symbolizes the woman's husband's clan. This type of Kimono is only worn on formal occasions in relatives such as weddings.
5/ Mofuku Kimono: All of this Kimono is black and is only worn at the funeral of a close relative.
6/ Shiromaku Kimono: This is the traditional wedding dress of Japanese girls, so only one color is white, symbolizing the purity of the bride in both body and spirit.
7/ Tsumugi Kimono: This type of Kimono is for peasants and commoners
8/ Tsukesage Kimono: This type of Kimon has a pattern that runs along the body and back of the shirt and meets at the top of the shoulder for decoration. This kimono is worn when attending tea ceremonies, flower arrangements or friends' weddings.
