An 85-year-old male patient was referred to our clinic from another dental office.
We were able to achieve excellent retention and a good fit with his new dentures.

However, this is exactly the moment we need to be careful.

Some patients may complain that the new dentures feel larger than their previous ones, even if the fit is clinically ideal.
Especially when the new dentures are bigger than the old ones, it’s important to anticipate this reaction.

That’s why thorough patient education before delivery is essential.

Recently, I’ve found that giving patients a 3D-printed trial denture to take home and use for a while is a very effective way to avoid such issues. It allows us to get valuable feedback from the patient before final delivery.

After all, a denture is not successful just because we made it — it’s only truly successful when the patient can use it comfortably in their daily life.

Communication and preparation — these are the keys to smooth denture treatment.

The occlusal adjustment is also important in the closed-mouth functional impression for suction dentures to ensure even impression pressure. On the other hand, I have experienced cases where the mandibular position suddenly changes when confirming the occlusal position with a stable, suctioned impression body. I speculate that this occurs because the stable impression body allows the patient’s muscles to relax. Both factors are crucial for patient satisfaction, so it is important not to overlook them.

In this alternative workflow for SEMCD, instead of using heavy body silicone impression material, the individual tray is relined with GC’s soft liner before performing a wash impression with silicone.

The results obtained are the same as the conventional method.

However, it is important to note that the stone model must be fabricated or scanned immediately after taking the impression to ensure accuracy and prevent distortion.
