One of the things I love most about yoga asana (postures) is that many of them are unfamiliar at first. Moving the body into a shape that feels different or new or strange requires us to slow down and pay attention to how things feel - what muscles are we engaging or stretching, what is the tilt of the hip or rotation of the shoulder, what are the elbows doing, where is the body in space, do I reach further or back off, etc.

Try something new, that confuses and challenges you. Get quiet, and notice what your mind does.

Cupping can help reduce muscle tightness, improve mobility, and support healthy tissue function. The suction from the cups gently lifts the skin and fascia, which can help relieve areas that feel “stuck” or stiff, and release fascial adhesions that limit mobility. (Fascia is a thin, web-like layer of connective tissue that surrounds and weaves through muscles, tendons, and organs, holding everything in place while allowing movement. It’s strong yet flexible, similar to a spiderweb or cling wrap, adapting to the body’s movements but tightening when stressed.)

While cupping primarily affects fascia, it can also create a decompression effect on the muscles underneath. This helps tissues move more freely, encourages blood flow, and allows muscles to recover more efficiently.

In the context of a deep tissue massage, applying cups can help unlock very tight fascia to allow for deeper muscle work. I use them a lot! Ask about it during your next session ✨

For many people, the holiday season can feel stressful, and be physically and emotionally taxing. Whether you are alone for the holiday (any holiday) or spending it with family and friends, here are some self-care ideas to support you. Even if you are spending the holidays with people, remember that self-care is not selfish. On the flip side, taking care of your own needs can help you be ultimately more present with the other people in your life.

Take breaks
Go outside
Nourish your body with healthy food that gives you energy
Pay attention to your body’s needs and honor them
Incorporate movement into your day
Reach out to a friend
Skip social media for the day
Read a book
Say no
Allow yourself to indulge if you want to, with intention. YOU get to choose.
Stay hydrated
Have some tea
Take a hot bath or shower
Listen to a guided meditation
Bring awareness to your breath
Get cozy with a weighted blanket
Set and reinforce boundaries
Light candles
Spritz aromatherapy on a scarf around your neck
Savor the sensation of an emollient lip balm, or anything else you can do at any time that invokes relaxing and grounding physical sensation
