Government: "Every child must stay in school whether they’ve paid fees or not."
Also Government: forgets to send capitation for three terms straight.
Principals: "But how do we run the school?"
Government: "That sounds like a personal problem. Also, don’t you dare send anyone home."
A principal adds an extra 300 bob for survival. What follows? Summons, threats, national outrage, and probably a parliamentary committee by Friday morning.
Then we move to discipline.
Government bans corporal punishment. Teachers adapt and become motivational speakers with chalk.
"Good morning class."
"Good morning sir."
"Please stop throwing desks through windows."
"Thank you."
Teachers teach and go home. Schools slowly manufacture WWE contestants, cartel negotiators and part-time riot consultants. Suddenly everyone asks:
"Where are morals disappearing to?"
Government blames parents, parents blame teachers, teachers blame the system, the system blames weather patterns.
Then the moment a teacher attempts to discipline a learner, parents appear like Marvel Avengers demanding arrests, press conferences and compensation for emotional damage. At this point schools are not institutions of learning, they are escape rooms with a timetable. More fires, more riots, more breakage, more indiscipline, less morals.
There’s confusion everywhere. Ministries are confused, parents are confused, teachers are confused, principals are confused, and learners are confidently ungovernable.
Only me and the watchman seem to understand what’s going on. Ahsante.
