Five Die of Rift Valley Fever in Isiolo
Isiolo County Health Chief Officer Ibrahim Alio at least five people have died from rift valley fever disease in Isiolo in the last two weeks following a reported outbreak in the county.
The five are from a total of seven who have tested positive for the disease in Isiolo south constituency.
The zoonotic disease is transmitted from animals to human beings through mosquito bite, meat eating or consuming anything from an infected animal.
According to Isiolo health chief officer Ibrahim Aliow, the disease is more life threatening than covid-19 as its killing over 70% of those who contract it.
On 18th, December, 2020, the department of health received the positive results for the 7 patients who were suspected to have contracted the disease.
According to Aliow, the affected areas include: Korbesa, Iresaboru, and Sericho among other areas.
Aliow said that his department in collaboration with the livestock and Fisheries department has dispatched health officers in the affected areas to ascertain whether the disease is from livestock or from other sources.
“My team is already on the way to the affected areas and they will prepare a report that will guide our action,” Aliow said.
Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries CEC Dr. Lawrence Mwongela, said that they are going to spray the animals in the affected areas to cut the transmission through mosquito bites.
“We are also going to vaccinate the animals in order to protect them from the deadly disease,” Mwongela added.
Mwongela said that his department is looking for about 200,000 doses of vaccines to vaccinate the animals in the region.
This comes in a time when the country is batting covid-19 pandemic amidst health workers strike.
