In the past month I’ve seen five patients who attempted su***de and several more with active suicidal thoughts — most were struggling with depression and grief. These heartbreaking experiences remind us that crisis can strike anyone, even those who seem to be “holding up” on the surface. Please take extra care of your loved ones during low moments: a simple check-in, a kind question, or noticing when someone withdraws can make a life-saving difference.
If someone tells you they’re thinking about hurting themselves, listen without judgment, stay with them (or ensure they are not left alone), and help them connect with a trusted professional or local emergency services right away. Remove immediate means of harm if safe to do so, and encourage ongoing support — grief and depression are treatable and help is available. If someone is in immediate danger, contact emergency services now.
