Uses of Ultrasound

Ultrasound (Sonography) is a medical imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of structures inside the body. It is non-invasive, painless, and does not use radiation, making it safe for various diagnostic and therapeutic applications.

• Determines the baby’s position, growth, and gestational age.
• Identifies multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets).
2. Abdominal Imaging
• Examines organs like the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, pancreas, and spleen.
• Detects conditions such as gallstones, kidney stones, liver disease, or tumors.
3. Cardiology (Echocardiography)
• Assesses heart structure and function.
• Detects heart valve diseases, congenital defects, and heart failure.
• Evaluates blood flow and cardiac output.
4. Musculoskeletal System
• Diagnoses muscle, ligament, and tendon injuries.
• Used in sports medicine for joint and soft tissue injuries.
5. Thyroid & Neck Imaging
• Detects thyroid nodules, cysts, and tumors.
• Evaluates lymph nodes and salivary glands.
6. Breast Ultrasound
• Identifies cysts, tumors, or abnormalities in breast tissue.
• Used as a follow-up to mammography.
7. Pelvic Ultrasound
• Examines the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes in women.
• Diagnoses conditions like fibroids, ovarian cysts, and endometriosis.
• Evaluates the prostate gland and bladder in men.
8. Vascular Ultrasound (Doppler Ultrasound)
• Assesses blood flow in arteries and veins.
• Detects blood clots, blockages, and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Therapeutic & Interventional Uses
• Guiding Biopsies & Needle Procedures (e.g., thyroid, liver, or breast biopsies).
• Ultrasound Therapy: Used in physical therapy to reduce inflammation and promote healing.
• Shockwave Lithotripsy: Breaks up kidney stones.

OBSTETRICS UTRASOUND AND REASONS TO DO IT
Obstetric ultrasonography is a frequent consult in radiology, whether it be early in pregnancy to evaluate intrauterine gestation, at mid-term to evaluate fetal anatomy, or at near-term when issues of fetal growth are at hand.

Indications for Obstetric Ultrasound

4.To assess for certain fetal anomalies in high-risk patients, including anencephaly.

5.Concern for molar pregnancy.

6.As an adjunct to chorionic villus sampling, embryo transfer, or localization and removal of an intrauterine device.

7.To measure nuchal translucency as part of the evaluation for chromosomal aneuploidy.

8.Some acceptable indications for ultrasound evaluation in the second or third trimester are listed below

9.To screen for fetal anomalies or to determine fetal well-being
