Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: What You Need to Know
Waking up at night with throbbing pain, numbness, or tingling in your hands? If shaking your hands brings relief, you may be experiencing carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS).
CTS happens when the median nerve in your wrist is compressed as it passes through a narrow tunnel formed by the wrist bones and ligaments.
Who is at risk?
✓People doing repetitive hand or wrist movements
✓Those with wrist injuries, arthritis, or smaller wrist anatomy
✓Women, especially during pregnancy or menopause
✓People with diabetes, thyroid disease, or obesity
Symptoms include:
✓Tingling, burning, or numbness (except in the little finger)
✓Pain that can radiate up the arm
✓Nighttime symptoms that disturb sleep
✓Hand weakness and difficulty with fine tasks
Treatment options:
✓Wrist splints at night
✓Rest and activity modification
✓Corticosteroid injections
✓Surgery if symptoms are severe or persistent
Carpal tunnel syndrome often starts gradually but can worsen if untreated. Early diagnosis and care are key to preventing long-term nerve damage. If you notice these symptoms, consult your healthcare provider.
