🌽🌽 WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME TO HARVEST MAIZE FOR SILAGE? 🌽🌽

At Tamia Feeds, we believe quality silage does not start in the store — it starts in the farm!
Many farmers ask: After how many months should maize be harvested for silage?

✅ Maize for silage is usually ready 3 to 4 months (90–120 days) after planting.

However, the exact time depends on:
The maize variety
Rainfall and weather conditions
Soil fertility
Farm management practices

The BEST stage to harvest is the ½ to ⅔ milk line (Dough Stage).

At this stage:
✔ The grain is soft like dough
✔ The cob is well filled
✔ Leaves are still green
✔ Whole plant dry matter is around 30–35%

This stage gives: 🌟 High energy content
🌟 Good starch levels
🌟 Proper fermentation
🌟 Better milk production
🌟 Healthy and productive animals

🚫 Harvesting too early (2–2.5 months):
Too much water
Low nutrients
Poor silage fermentation

🚫 Harvesting too late (after 4+ months when fully dry):
Too hard and dry
Difficult to compact
Reduced digestibility
📌 Simple test: Break the cob.
If white milk flows out → Too early.
If it is soft like dough → Perfect time.
If very hard → Too late.

🌽 SILAGE COMPACTING USING A WATER-FILLED DRUM

Why compact silage?
Compacting silage removes trapped air (oxygen) from chopped fodder. This creates anaerobic conditions, which are essential for proper fermentation. Good compaction prevents spoilage, mould growth, and nutrient loss.

✅ Materials Needed
- Clean plastic or metal drum (100–200 litres)
- Water (to add weight to the drum)
- Well-chopped fodder (maize, sorghum, napier grass, etc.)
- Silage pit, trench, or heavy-gauge plastic bags
- Polythene sheets for covering

🛠️ Step-by-Step Process
1️⃣ Prepare the fodder
Chop the forage into small pieces (about 1–2 cm). Smaller pieces compact better and ferment faster.
2️⃣ Fill in layers
Place chopped fodder into the pit or bag in thin layers (15–30 cm thick).
3️⃣ Compact using the water-filled drum
Fill the drum with water to increase its weight
Roll or press the drum firmly over each layer
Move slowly back and forth to squeeze out as much air as possible
4️⃣ Repeat layer by layer
Add another layer of fodder and compact again. Continue until the pit or bag is full.
5️⃣ Final compaction and sealing
After the last layer, compact thoroughly.
Cover immediately with polythene sheets and seal tightly to prevent air or water entry.

💡 Why a Water-Filled Drum Works Well
- Provides controlled weight for effective compaction
- Affordable and easily available
- Ideal where tractors or rollers are not available
- Reduces mould growth and spoilage

📌 Tips for Best Results
- Compact immediately after filling each layer
- Do not overfill before compacting
- Ensure the drum is clean to avoid contamination
- Seal the silage on the same day it is made
