How can I prevent tooth decay?

The best way to prevent tooth decay and remove plaque is by brushing and cleaning between your teeth every day. Brushing removes plaque from the tooth surfaces. Brush your teeth twice per day with a soft-bristled brush. The size and shape of your toothbrush should fit your mouth and allow you to reach all areas easily. Use an antimicrobial toothpaste containing fluoride, which helps protect your teeth from decay. Clean between the teeth once a day with floss or interdental cleaners to remove plaque from between the teeth, where the toothbrush can't reach. Flossing is essential to prevent gum disease.

CHIKUNGUNYA VIRUS = Symptoms, Diagnosis, & Treatment

Symptoms
Most people infected with chikungunya virus will develop some symptoms.
Symptoms usually begin 3–7 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.
The most common symptoms are fever and joint pain.
Other symptoms may include headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, or rash.
Chikungunya disease does not often result in death, but the symptoms can be severe and disabling.
Most patients feel better within a week. In some people, the joint pain may persist for months.
People at risk for more severe disease include newborns infected around the time of birth, older adults (≥65 years), and people with medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease.
Once a person has been infected, he or she is likely to be protected from future infections.

Diagnosis
The symptoms of chikungunya are similar to those of dengue and Zika, diseases spread by the same mosquitoes that transmit chikungunya.
See your healthcare provider if you develop the symptoms described above and have visited an area where chikungunya is found.
If you have recently traveled, tell your healthcare provider when and where you traveled.
Your healthcare provider may order blood tests to look for chikungunya or other similar viruses like dengue and Zika.

Treatment
There is no vaccine to prevent or medicine to treat chikungunya virus.
Treat the symptoms:
Get plenty of rest.
Drink fluids to prevent dehydration.
Take medicine such as acetaminophen (Tylenol®) or paracetamol to reduce fever and pain.
Do not take aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS until dengue can be ruled out to reduce the risk of bleeding).
If you are taking medicine for another medical condition, talk to your healthcare provider before taking additional medication.
If you have chikungunya, prevent mosquito bites for the first week of your illness.
During the first week of infection, chikungunya virus can be found in the blood and passed from an infected person to a mosquito through mosquito bites.
An infected mosquito can then spread the virus to other people.

WHEN TO DO ULTRASOUND SCANS IN PREGNANCY.
FOR ALL ULTRASOUND SCANS CALL Randburg Community Hospital
When are scans usually carried out?
During your first trimester, you may have an early scan at about six weeks or seven weeks. However, this will only happen if you're experiencing problems, such as pain or va**nal bleeding.
Your first scan is likely to be a dating scan when you're between 11 weeks and 13 weeks plus six days pregnant. This will confirm your expected date of delivery.
In your second trimester you will be offered an anomaly scan at about 20 weeks. This is to check that your baby is developing normally.
The anomaly scan may need to be repeated at 23 weeks if the sonographer hasn't been able to see everything she needs to assess your baby's health.
This may be if you're overweight, or if your baby was in an awkward position at your first scan.
In your third trimester, your doctor or midwife may recommend that you have a growth scan between 28 weeks and 40 weeks. This will be if you:
previously gave birth to a small baby are having twins.
have other complications, such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
are pregnant with a baby who measures smaller than expected
are measuring larger than expected and your midwife suspects that there's too much fluid around your baby.
Does an ultrasound hurt?
An abdominal scan is usually painless except for the mild discomfort of the transducer pressing on your tummy if you have a very full bladder.
If you are in pain, tell the sonographer. She may ask you to half empty your bladder, which will make the examination more comfortable.
You shouldn't be asked to fill your bladder for scans in the third trimester.
At this stage, your baby is much bigger and the amniotic fluid around him will help conduct the echoes to create the image on the screen.
Some women prefer a va**nal scan, as it's best done with an empty bladder.
There's no need to feel embarrassed, as the sonographer does these scans every day.
She’ll cover you with a sheet, and if you relax your muscles to allow the transducer to slide in easily, it shouldn't be uncomfortable.
Do I have to have an ultrasound?
Most women have at least one scan during pregnancy, but you don't have to have one.
Scans give useful information about your pregnancy, and most women find them reassuring.
However, many abnormalities can’t be seen on a scan, and sometimes the scan findings can cause mums to worry unnecessarily.
If your midwife recommends a scan and you'd rather not have one, ask her to explain her reasons.
The final decision will always rest with you.
What if the scan shows a problem?
It's natural to be worried if your scan suggests that there's a problem with your baby.
Sometimes a clear diagnosis can be made from the scan, such as for spina bifida. Or the scan may show minor changes (markers) which are usually nothing to worry about.
If the sonographer finds anything unusual during the scan, she should refer you to a doctor within 24 hours.
If necessary, you'll be seen by a fetal medicine specialist, usually within 72 hours.

Did you know that RANDBURG COMMUNITY HOSPITAL is a level four facility with a fully equipped theatre and qualified surgeons?
A surgery that involves cutting up a patient has now been simplified by the use of a Laparoscopy machine that is available at the facility.
Dr. Thomas, a general surgeon conducted the urology procedure on a patient who had an injury in her urethra. A repair was done with stenting of the urethra, and now she is back for the removal of the stent.
The Laparoscopy machine was used to put and remove the stent.
Other procedures done using the machine include-:
- Procedure for male patients who have large prostate with difficulty in urination.
- Patients with tumors in the bladder.
- Patients who have blood in the urine.
- Bladder stones.
Laparoscopy is a type of surgical procedure that allows a surgeon to access the inside of the abdomen (tummy) and pelvis without having to make large incisions in the skin.
This procedure is also known as keyhole surgery or minimally invasive surgery.
Dr. Owuor also successfully conducted an Orchidopexy surgery on a child who had left undescended te**is at the facility.
All these operations were catered for by NHIF. Karibu RANDBURG COMMUNITY Randburg Community Hospital

What you need to know. ..
VAGINAL DISCHARGE
Even at the mere mention of the two words, fear and trepidation ensue! Truth is, va**nal discharge most times are harmless, normal and physiological process of keeping the va**na in good health.
The va**na is a very conservative, self-cleaning and regulating female reproductive part. Vaginal discharge serves a kinda housekeeping function, normally there are fluids made by some glands inside the va**na and the womb, these fluids carries away dead cells and bacteria. So, the natural role of the discharge is to keep the va**na clean, healthy and free of infections.
It is very important to note, that the color, amount, odor and consistency of va**nal discharge vary depending on the stage of your normal reproductive/menstrual cycle. Vaginal discharge can vary from whitish, milky and sticky to clear and watery between your menstrual. Normally, there will be more discharge if you are ovulating, breastfeeding, sexually aroused or pregnant. The odor too can vary from odorless to foul smelling.
Like I mentioned earlier, most of the time, va**nal discharge is perfectly and physiologically normal. However, if your va**nal discharge has an unusual odor and appearance, or occurs along with itching or pain, it may be a sign that something's wrong. It could be an infection, an abnormality or even a sign of disease condition.
Let’s delve into the abnormal va**nal discharge!
What causes abnormal discharge?
Generally anything that alters the normal va**nal environment can lead to discharge. There are harmless bacteria that live in the va**na, so any change in the balance can lead to foul smelling, colorful discharge. However, it is important to note that most causes of abnormal va**nal discharge, such as yeast infection, bacterial vaginosis or menopause symptoms are relatively harmless, but can be quite very uncomfortable.
Most times, abnormal va**nal discharge preludes a sexually transmitted infection. Since these infections can be passed on to other sexual partners or can spread to the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes detection and treatment is very important.
Vaginal discharge can also be a signal of cervical cancer, in this case this discharge will be brownish or blood-tinged.
Some important likely causes of abnormal Vaginal discharge.
1. Unrestricted antibiotic or steroid use
2. Bacterial vaginosis, a type of infection common in pregnant women, or in women with multiple sexual partners.
3. Birth control pills
4. Cervical cancer
5. Cervical polyps, noncancerous (benign) growths on your cervix
6. Sexual transmitted diseases, (Chlamydia , Ge***al warts , Gonorrhea HPV infection Trichomoniasis
7. Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
8. Vaginal atrophy
9. Vaginal cancer
10. Vaginitis
11. Yeast infection (va**nal)
Types of Abnormal Vaginal Discharge and likely causes:
1. Bloody or Brown discharge: Might be because of irregular menstrual cycle or in some rare situations, cervical cancer.
2. Cloudy or Yellow discharge: Might be gonorrhea.
3. Frothy, yellow or greenish with bad smell: Trichomonas infection
4. Pink: shedding of uterine lining after childbirth
5. Thick White Cheesy: Yeast infection
6. White, gray or yellow with fish odor: Bacterial Vaginosis.
So how does your doctor diagnose abnormal Vaginal Discharge?
History taking, examination and some tests (Like Pap smear, to rule out cervical cancer) will aid in diagnosis.
There are key questions your doctor will ask, including:
1. The onset
2. Color
3. Smell
4. Duration
5. Any associated itching, burning
6. History of previous Sexually transmitted infections
7. Sexual partners
8. History of diabetes
9. History of douching
Treatment and Management of Abnormal Vaginal Discharge
Treatment is purely based on the cause.
• Specifically, Vaginal discharge due to yeast, will be treated with anti-fungal medication, most time inserted into the va**na in cream of jelly form.
• Bacterial Vaginosis is treated with specified antibiotics
• Trichomonas infections, treated specifically with Flagyl
What are the tips for keeping the va**na clean and preventing abnormal va**nal discharge?
• Keep the va**na clean, wash regularly with gentle , mild soap and warm water
• Avoid using scented soaps
• Avoid using feminine do**he
• Avoid feminine spray and bubble baths
• Maintain a strict healthy hygiene, always wipe from front to back to prevent bacteria from entering the va**na.
• Avoid tight fitting clothing
• Wear 100% cotton underpants
