Only at the age of seven years old I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, not anyone in my family having it, it has become tough for us all even though I was a kid. But having supportive and understanding parents made everything easy. They quickly learnt how to control my blood sugars, how to inject insulin, the diet I needed and also how to check my sugars. Slowly they accepted it and living with a diabetic kid became part of the journey.
Raising a diabetic kid is really tough since you cannot make him/her understand why they shouldn't eat sweet stuffs but with them they tried their best. I thank them all. Fast forward I grew up and when I was 11 years I started learning how to inject myself and to prick for blood glucose checking. From there I started knowing what condition I suffer from and how I should take care of myself.
Through all this I had started growing passion about Diabetes especially in Kids and young people because I know how it is to live with it. With all the stigma and discrimination that comes with it; but I decided to not let diabetes define my life.
I worked hard in my studies, finished high school and joined a college where I got an opportunity to network and start doing community projects. I started talking to people and sharing my Diabetic journey and how I still stand strong and like anybody else.
This motivated a lot of people and it gave me a power to start my own Diabetic organization Diabetic Champions in Mombasa where I advocate, Educate and create awareness about the chronic condition.
Through my advocacy I was spotted by Nordisk as a change maker in the area of my disease. We had several virtual calls and finally I agreed to shoot a documentary about my Diabetic life journey with them so as to share it across the globe.
I had a dream of sharing my journey with the whole world and they made it true, Thank you!
I hope the short documentary will inspire someone out there not only diabetics but anyone fighting any kind of disease and wanting to give up! I hope it enlightens your day as we celebrate WORLD DIABETES DAY 2022 today.
We are all champions πͺπ»π
