Only at the age of seven years old I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, not anyone in my family having it, it has become tough for us all even though I was a kid. But having supportive and understanding parents made everything easy. They quickly learnt how to control my blood sugars, how to inject insulin, the diet I needed and also how to check my sugars. Slowly they accepted it and living with a diabetic kid became part of the journey.

Raising a diabetic kid is really tough since you cannot make him/her understand why they shouldn't eat sweet stuffs but with them they tried their best. I thank them all. Fast forward I grew up and when I was 11 years I started learning how to inject myself and to prick for blood glucose checking. From there I started knowing what condition I suffer from and how I should take care of myself.

Through all this I had started growing passion about Diabetes especially in Kids and young people because I know how it is to live with it. With all the stigma and discrimination that comes with it; but I decided to not let diabetes define my life.

I worked hard in my studies, finished high school and joined a college where I got an opportunity to network and start doing community projects. I started talking to people and sharing my Diabetic journey and how I still stand strong and like anybody else.

This motivated a lot of people and it gave me a power to start my own Diabetic organization Diabetic Champions in Mombasa where I advocate, Educate and create awareness about the chronic condition.

Through my advocacy I was spotted by Nordisk as a change maker in the area of my disease. We had several virtual calls and finally I agreed to shoot a documentary about my Diabetic life journey with them so as to share it across the globe.

I had a dream of sharing my journey with the whole world and they made it true, Thank you!

I hope the short documentary will inspire someone out there not only diabetics but anyone fighting any kind of disease and wanting to give up! I hope it enlightens your day as we celebrate WORLD DIABETES DAY 2022 today.

We are all champions πŸ’ͺπŸ»πŸ’™

We are honoured to be appreciated for making our community better!

Yesterday our Executive Director was able to receive an award from as one of the Muslim Community Service CBO, this was incredible!

As a young lady who is diabetic mentor has been so passionate about it and had a dream to one day Educate, create awareness and support diabetic patients especially kids. As for this reason last year she was able to start The Diabetic Champions CBO and has run some programmes including free medical camps, creation of awareness, training and educating people about diabetes, diet and nutrition. For this her and the Team were able to positively impact the society!

Thank you once again The Muslim Media for the token of appreciation. Our team certainly did exceptional work last year and this year, and we are very proud of them for it. Thank you for recognising all of our efforts, it inspires us to continue to strive for excellence. we intend to continue supporting and giving back to the community

Yesterday our Diabetic Champion was featured in the star magazine talking about her Diabetic journey for the past 15 years.. She says it has not been easy since you cannot tell a 7 Yr old child not to eat sugary stuffs but she fought through it and now that makes her a champion πŸ’ͺ.

In the magazine she said diabetes can be managed if you take the diet, medications and do some exercises thus will prevent future complications. Diabetes is not a curse its a condition.

She talked about not stressing the child but showing them lots of love and care until they understand their health issue-this was addressed to TD1 parents. Nur had supportive parents she stated.

Did you know, diabetes is killing 15,000 Kenyans a year, and the rate is rising. Last year, half a million more Kenyans were diagnosed with diabetes. Almost every Kenyan now has someone in their inner circle of family and close friends with diabetes. 10% have type 1 diabetes, which is inherited, and 90% have type 2 diabetes, caused by eating too much sugar. It is predicted that by 2030, lifestyle diseases will account for 60% Kenyan deaths.

To curb the above mentioned risk, The Diabetic Champions together with other Civil Society Organization have stepped up and join hands together and hosted a medical camp for Diabetes & hypertension awareness.

In a spirit of synergy, we were able to submit a memorandum to the Mombasa Sub County Administration & these are some of our grievances:

1. Appeal to the government to ensure that it complies with its human rights obligations to ensure that the rights of people who are diagnosed with diabetes are respected, protected and fulfilled.

2. Urge the Ministry of Health to ensure the provision of accurate information on diabetes an hypertension through an elaborate public education, sensitization and awareness program that will dispel myths, misconceptions, misinformation and untruths regarding diabetes and hypertension which are guaranteed in our Kenyan Constitution.

3. Appeal to the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education to conduct trainings, launch and implement a comprehensive curriculum on Diabetes and hypertension targeting in and out of school adolescents and young people.

Among other grievances.
