Are you over the age of 40?
Do you live with high blood pressure (hypertension)?
Are you diabetic, or do you have a family member with hypertension or diabetes?
Are you overweight or obese?
You may be at high risk of kidney failure, even if you feel “fine.”
Why this matters:
Kidney disease is often silent.
By the time symptoms appear, more than 50–70% of kidney function may already be lost.
In Africa, majority of Black adults are disproportionately affected by:
• Hypertension
• Diabetes
• Obesity
• Late diagnosis of kidney disease
These conditions place enormous strain on the kidneys, leading to chronic kidney disease (CKD) and, in severe cases, kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplant.
The good news:
Early detection can slow, stop, or even prevent kidney failure.
Who should check their kidneys regularly?
• Adults over 40
• People with hypertension or diabetes
• Anyone overweight or obese
• Those with a family history of kidney disease, diabetes, or hypertension
Simple tests can save lives:
• Blood pressure check
• Blood sugar test
• Urine test (protein)
• Blood test (creatinine / eGFR)
Awareness is prevention. Screening is protection.
