🚨 HE**IN OVERDOSE ALERT: MYSTERY DRUG CLAIMING LIVES ALONG THE COAST 🚨

The rise in drug overdoses among people who inject drugs in Mombasa, Kilifi, and Lamu is deeply alarming. MEWA Health & Harm Reduction Services is on the frontline—reaching communities from Kisauni to Mtwapa, Kilifi Town to Pate Island—providing care, support, and treatment without discrimination.

Despite years of progress through innovation and compassion, a new wave of challenges now threatens lives and hard-won gains. From the suspension of critical services to the rise of lethal mystery substances, the situation is dire.

📊 From January to July 2025, MEWA has documented 11 overdose cases:

- 18% (n=2) were women.

- 55% of these cases ended in death.

- 64% occurred in Mombasa, 36% in Mtwapa.

- Alarmingly, 73% of the clients were on Methadone.

The most recent overdose happened in Magodoroni, Kisauni, on July 11 at 5:00 PM.

These numbers are not just statistics—they are lives lost, families broken, and futures stolen.

🆘 We urgently call for:

a). Widespread Naloxone distribution (injectable & nasal spray),

b). Targeted overdose prevention sensitization,

c). Policy action to protect and expand harm reduction services.

Together, let’s act before more lives are lost.

We were honored and privileged to host Dr. Ahmed Idris, Secretary General, Kenya Red Cross, together with Mr. Msallam, Regional Coordinator, Coast, Global Fund—HIV, beginning with a field visit to the Mtomondoni drug den in Mtwapa and thereafter having a fruitful meeting at our Mtwapa DIC in Kilifi County.
The visit aimed at assessing GF Program implementation at the grassroots level, where he interacted with project beneficiaries, frontline staff, and management.

Also discussed were the effects & response interventions resulting from the decrease in funding, long-term partnerships, and sustainability plans.

MEWA, in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), continues to advance the Alternative Treatment Initiative (ATI), a groundbreaking effort to promote alternatives to incarceration for individuals with drug use disorders.
Through this initiative, we've engaged a wide range of actors, including
1. Mombasa County Inspectorate Officers—trained to adopt health-centered responses in handling drug-related cases.
2. Magistrates—participating in dialogue sessions to integrate ATI principles into judicial decision-making.
3. Court Users Committee (CUC)—working collaboratively to ensure coordinated community-based interventions.
4. Regional Visitors from Sierra Leone—exchanging best practices and strengthening South-South cooperation.
Together, we are fostering a multi-sectoral approach that views drug use as a health issue, not a crime: empowering affected individuals with treatment and support instead of punishment.

We are proud to share that our Program Executive Director, Mr. Abdalla Ahmed Badhrus, has been officially appointed as a Member of the County Mental Health Council by the County Government of Mombasa, as published in the Kenya Gazette dated 4th July 2025 (Gazette Notice No. 8902).

This appointment recognizes Mr. Badhrus's outstanding leadership and tireless commitment to advancing mental health and harm reduction across the country. His inclusion in this key council reinforces MEWA’s vision of empowering communities through integrated and responsive mental health services.

We congratulate Mr. Badhrus on this well-deserved appointment and look forward to the impact he will make in shaping mental health policy and support services in Mombasa.

🌟 Success Stories: Bridging Gaps Through Collaboration & Clarity 🌟

When I first stepped into the field, I saw more than paperwork—I saw people doing their best with limited tools.

👣 Outreach workers are overwhelmed.
💉 Clinical staff stretched thin.
📊 Data teams are juggling numbers without clear direction.

So, I listened.

Through honest, on-site conversations, I learned what was working and what wasn’t. I reviewed documents, follow-up notes, and the reporting tools they used every day. Not to find fault, but to make their work easier and their impact stronger.

Together, we reshaped how outreach was planned and how client follow-ups were tracked. I supported the teams in telling their story better through quarterly reports that finally reflected the incredible effort they put in on the ground.

It was never just about fixing systems—it was about honoring the people behind them.

🫂 Healing Families, One Conversation at a Time

At the King Fahad Methadone Clinic and the MEWA DIC, 31 family members came together for something rare:
A safe space to talk, listen, and begin healing.

These family therapy sessions weren’t only for those in treatment—they were about restoring the lives connected to them.

Many had carried years of silence, anger, and pain. Some were supporting loved ones still on MAT. Others had seen them relapse or disappear.

Right now, the MAT facility supports 218 active clients, and the message is clear: family therapy is not optional. It’s essential.

Without it:
⚠️ Relapse rates rise
⚠️ Clients are lost to follow-up
⚠️ Families suffer in silence

Through these sessions, families learned how to communicate, cope, and support without losing themselves. 💬❤️

And what emerged was powerful.

Families shared struggles with youth addicted to khat and benzodiazepines, stories of divorce, broken homes, and deep conflict. It became clear—addiction is a community crisis.

But in that room, something changed.
Families began to believe that healing is possible—not just for the individual, but for everyone touched by their journey. 💪🏽

📍 This is the real work. Quiet impact. Stronger families. A better future—together.
