Did you know emotional stress can trigger a crisis in someone who is battling any sickness or disease especially cancer?

A cancer patients stress generates from arguments or sad news, overthinking, fear, pressure, and even from hoping too hard. Even the constant search for a miracle can be stressful.

They worry about anything and everything; the pain, the financial burden, the social stigma etc.

Sometimes patients try to put up an armour around them by feeling like they always have to be strong. However inside they feel vulnerable and weak.

They can feel like they are the cause of distress or discomfort to others around them.

That kind of emotional stress can make the body weak. How can we reduce the stress for them? Let us look at what we can do to be more supportive:

Never make them feel like a burden to their care givers.

Lets understand that their bodies are fighting from within. Consider their needs when planning activities or routines that may force them to keep going even when they’re tired.

Allow them to rest or take breaks irrespective of normal timings.

Do not doubt or ignore when they say they’re in pain. Caregivers should keep track of their drugs and dosages and assist in monitoring the pain patterns.

Do not make them feel like their sickness is a hindrance to other people's normal lives.

Listen to them and be attentive. Encourage them to say how they feel.

Celebrate their little wins.

Don’t let their whole life be about their disease. Encourage visitors to not make too many inquiries about their illness but instead indulge them in positive conversations.

Encourage them join in some normal activities if they can manage to do so and are willing. This gives them a sense of normalcy.

Be patient. Show them love, not pressure.

Let us resolve to be more empathetic towards our sick family members, neighbours, colleagues and friends.
Because emotional peace is part of their healing. Let us be there for them!

Record management is an essential part of any health care facility. Accurate, well kept and updated records allow doctors to make timely and informed decisions, reducing medical errors and improving treatment outcomes. A well-organized record-keeping system helps hospitals operate smoothly, reducing paperwork delays and administrative burdens. We at Mombasa Cancer Centre take this aspect of maintaining proper records seriously. As part of our CME, we were most obliged to be taken through a refresher course by a representative of the NCI

Mombasa Cancer Centre had multiple reasons to celebrate today. Yes, we have turned 6 and it was a reason to celebrate our anniversary in style and gratitude with our patients, their caregivers, our entire team, stakeholders and event partners Adonis.

We were also celebrating and appreciating our Nurses this week. Indeed nurses stand as the cornerstones of healthcare, embodying compassion and dedication. Hats off to all the nurses who always go the extra mile in patient comfort, empathy and treatment. We say ahsante sana to you 🙏🏻

We were privileged to be joined by our 'winners for life' cancer survivors. It was touching to be able to engage with them and learn of their resilience, passion, challenges and achievements. We celebrate you today and always.
