👹 GOUT 👹
👉Gout is a common and painful type of arthritis or joint inflammation. The cause is a buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints. Gout attacks cause rapid onset of pain, swelling, and warmth in one or more joints at a time.
👉What is Uric Acid❓
Uric acid is a waste product found in the blood. It is produced when the body processes and breaks down chemicals known as purines. Uric acid dissolves in the blood, passes through the kidneys, gets mixed with urine, and is expelled from the body. If uric acid remains in the body, its concentration can lead to a condition called hyperuricemia, which has the potential to cause damage to various body parts and organs.
👉Areas of the body that can be affected by gout include:
🔸Joints.
🔸Bursae, cushion-like sacs between bones and other soft tissues.
🔸Tendon sheaths, membranes that surround tendons.
🔸Kidneys, because the high uric acid levels can lead to stones.
👉Gout is a disease that can move through several stages:
🔸Hyperuricemia, when you have elevated levels of urate in your blood over a long period and even crystals in the joint, but you do not have symptoms.
🔸Gout flares, when you have periodic attacks of intense pain and swelling in your joints.
🔸Interval or intercritical gout, which is the time between gout attacks when you do not have any symptoms.
🔸Tophi, a late stage of gout when crystals build up in the skin or other areas of the body. Depending on their location, tophi can permanently damage your joints and other internal organs such as the kidneys. Proper treatment can prevent the development of tophi.
👉Causes:
Hyperuricemia, an excess of uric acid in the blood, is the main cause of gout.
The body produces uric acid during the breakdown of purines. These are chemicals found in high amounts in certain foods and drinks, such as alcohol, turkey and goose, liver, and seafood.
Typically, uric acid is dissolved in the blood and excreted in urine via the kidneys. If the body produces too much uric acid or does not excrete enough, it can build up and form needle-like crystals. These trigger inflammation and pain in the joints and surrounding tissues.
👉What Is Hyperuricemia❓
(High uric acid level)
A high uric acid level can be the result of the body making too much uric acid, not getting rid of enough of it, or both.
Causes of a high uric acid level in the blood include:
🔴Diuretics (water retention relievers)
🔴Drinking too much alcohol
🔴Drinking too much soda or eating too much of foods that contain fructose, a type of sugar
🔴Genetics also known as inherited traits
🔴High blood pressure (hypertension)
🔴Immune-suppressing drugs
🔴Kidney problems
🔴Leukemia
🔴Metabolic syndrome
🔴Niacin, also called vitamin B-3
🔴Obesity
🔴Polycythemia vera
🔴Psoriasis
🔴A purine-rich diet, high in foods such as liver, game meat, anchovies and sardines
🔴Tumor lysis syndrome — a rapid release of cells into the blood caused by certain cancers or by chemotherapy for those cancers.
👉 Signs and symptoms of gout almost always occur suddenly, and often at night. They include:
🟠Intense joint pain. Gout usually affects the big toe, but it can occur in any joint. Other commonly affected joints include the ankles, knees, elbows, wrists, and fingers. The pain will likely be most severe within the first four to 12 hours after it begins.
🟠Lingering discomfort. After the most severe pain subsides, some joint discomfort may last from a few days to weeks. Later attacks are likely to last longer and affect more joints.
🟠Inflammation and redness. The affected joint or joints become swollen, tender, warm, and red.
🟠Limited range of motion. As gout progresses, you may be unable to move your joints normally.
👉Risk factors
Several factors can increase the risk of hyperuricemia and gout, including:
🟠Advanced age: Gout is more common in older adults and rarely develops in children.
🟠Sex: In people younger than 65, gout is four times as prevalent among males as females. It is three times as prevalent in males after the age of 65.
🟠Genetics: A family history of gout can increase a person’s risk.
🟠Dietary choices: Alcohol interferes with the removal of uric acid from the body, and a high-purine diet increases the amount of uric acid in the body. Consuming alcohol and having this type of diet can increase the risk of gout.
🟠Lead exposure: Studies have suggested a link between chronic lead exposure and an increased risk of gout.
🟠Medications: Certain medications can increase uric acid levels in the body. These include some diuretics and drugs containing salicylate.
🟠Weight: Being overweight or obese and having high levels of visceral body fat are linked with an increased risk of gout. None of these factors directly causes the condition, however.
🟠Other health conditions: Renal insufficiency and other kidney conditions can reduce the body’s ability to remove waste, leading to elevated uric acid levels. Other conditions associated with gout include high blood pressure and diabetes.
