Today we are reading the white/Whipala paper brief that forms the basis of the creation of other documents that will be created to support the goals and objectives of the coalition on indigenous people's food systems.

We think these two goals as outlined in the COALITION could be a real game changer.

Goal1: Respect, recognize, protect, and strengthen Indigenous Peoples’ food systems across the world

Goal2: Disseminate and scale up traditional knowledge and good practices from Indigenous Peoples’ food systems with the potential to transform global food systems across the board

The following multi-faceted approaches need to be adopted in the face of violent conflicts to mitigate food insecurity and its effects as well as reduce the conflicts and their effects:
1." Respect Access to Food as a Human Right During Violent Conflict
2. Build Bridges Linking Humanitarian Action, Development, and Peacebuilding
3. Integrate Local Capacities and Perceptions
4. Improve the Links Between Early Warning and Early Action in Conflict-Driven Food Crises"

Digesting the Science and Innovation for Food Systems Report

*About 66% of the global population affected by conflict-driven food crises arising from localized tensions, armed conflicts, violent extremism, and inter-communal violence are located in Africa.

*Hunger as a weapon during conflicts resulting in
• blocking food access
• Destroying food infrastructure
• Cutting food supplies can ignite mass starvation, malnutrition, and hunger

*The food security situation in violent conflicts often persists even after the end of a conflict because
1. Rehabilitating war zones for food production and supply takes decades
2. Clearing battlefields,
3. Rebuilding physical infrastructure,
4. Establishing operational governance structures is costly and it takes time

Digesting the Science and Innovation for Food Systems Report
**Diversification for Enhanced Food Systems Resilience
1. Cropping systems such as Bio-Diverse ecosystems and Agroecology play a critical role in promoting diversification at production and of landscapes, and regions.
Understanding and of diversified farming systems is critical in achieving diversification strategies.
2. Policies to support diverse and sustainable (Economic, Social, Environmental) farming and cropping systems are crucial given the economic cost of diversifying cropping systems often outweighs the ecological costs.
3. Diversification of incomes at the household level is crucial given the prominent role of incomes in supporting the well-being of households. Household incomes can be diversified through new forms of risk management, social safety nets such as weather index insurance, social assistance, social insurance, and remittances from rural-urban migration.
4. Besides integrating national markets to the global economy, integrating smallholder farmers and households into local markets and regional economies is key to achieving diversification.

As an EVWA changemaker and a system hero Momanyi and Laura founder after hosting an independent system Diaolue in the lead to UN Food System Summit and follow-up activities, we seek to seize the momentum that emerged through the
UN Food Systems Summit and use this moment to elevate the voices of women in food systems and correct structural gender inequalities in our spaces through capacity building and knowledge creation.

By digesting the Global Food 50/50 Report we seek to bring the attention of various actors across the food systems and challenge them to contribute towards the achievement of SDG 5.

It is 2023….. We all agree that SDG 5, Gender equality is critical to equitable and sustainable food Systems.
We also know better that despite SDG 5 being prioritized by various actors, inequalities have widened.

But do we know where gender inequalities exist within our food systems?
But, how do we address gender inequalities in our food systems?
Do we have data and timely information to accelerate progress in mainstreaming gender equality in Food systems?
Are there accountability mechanisms that track and accelerate progress in achieving SDG 5?

Let us learn together, every Tuesday...
