On September 19, 2025, the Homabay County Review convened with key stakeholders, including the Chief Officer of Public Health, Director of Health, County Health Management Team (CHMT), Sub-County Management Members, and the Program team. The meeting focused on evaluating the uptake of contraceptives among adolescents, a critical measure in reducing teenage pregnancy. Data presented highlighted a positive upward trend in family planning (FP) uptake across Homabay County, reflecting the A360 Program’s significant impact in lowering teenage pregnancy rates within the catchment areas of implementing facilities. The County leadership expressed appreciation for the program’s contributions to improving adolescent and youth sexual and reproductive health (AYSRH) outcomes. Discussions also centered on institutionalizing the Program to ensure its sustainability, with efforts underway to strengthen County ownership of the intervention. However, concerns were raised regarding the allocation and disbursement of funds to support AYSRH activities across the County, indicating a need for improved financial mechanisms to sustain and scale the program’s impact. The collaborative efforts aim to address these challenges while continuing to prioritize adolescent health and well-being through effective, County-led interventions.

HEY BINTI LET US LEARN ABOUT AKINYI🙂‍↕️

Akinyi, a lively 16-year-old from Homa Bay, grew up captivated by Lake Victoria’s waves. Her carefree life shifted when she met Juma, a controlling boyfriend who dictated her clothes, friends, and time. At 15, she learned she was pregnant, facing shame and fear. Community whispers and family disappointment dimmed her dream of finishing secondary school.

Hope came when Mama Rose, a Community Health Promoter, invited her to a . Surrounded by girls with similar struggles, Akinyi found solace. The program’s lessons on resilience and health inspired her to join Antenatal Care clinics, where nurses’ kindness eased her fears, preparing her for motherhood.

When her daughter, Nyamalo, was born, Akinyi embraced love but faced the challenges of single motherhood. Through ’s partnership with , she received post-partum family planning, gaining control over her future. Life skills sessions taught her financial literacy and confidence, sparking a venture. With a small grant, she opened a fish and vegetable stall by the lake. Her bustling stand funded Nyamalo’s needs—diapers, clothes, and milk.

The sessions also healed Akinyi’s mental health, replacing guilt with self-worth. One evening, watching Lake Victoria’s sunset, she vowed to return to school, determined to inspire Nyamalo. Now 16, Akinyi’s business thrives, her daughter brings joy, and her mental health is strong. Saving for school fees, she’s ready to chase her education. The lake, once a backdrop to hardship, now reflects her resilience. Through and her grit, Akinyi is shaping her own future.

Under the Binti Shupavu program, the Community Health Extension Worker (CHEW) and Community Health Promoters (CHPs) at Makanzani Dispensary in County, are integrating Adolescent and Youth Sexual Health (AYSH) conversations into dialogue sessions, outreaches, and in-reaches; creating safe spaces for young people to access accurate information, ask questions, and get linked to essential services.

In doing so, is bridging critical gaps in youth-friendly health care, empowering adolescents with the knowledge, confidence, and access they need to thrive.
